Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, STEM, Museum Studies or related field.
  • Five years of experience in education, program management, museums, science centers or nonprofit leadership.
  • Experience supervising staff and volunteers.
  • Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and pass a background check.

Position Summary

The Education Specialist leads the Discovery Center of Idaho's educational programming, ensuring engaging, high-quality STEM experiences that inspire lifelong learning. This position oversees educational staff and volunteers, manages and delivers programs and partnerships to support the Center's mission and visibility.

Direct Reports: Volunteer Coordinator, Seasonal Camp Instructors, Contractors

Reports To: Chief Operations Officer

Key Responsibilities:

Educational Programs

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate camps, field trips, homeschool programs, and special events.
  • Ensure educational programs are engaging, consistent, and aligned with organizational goals and educational standards.
  • Collaborate with Exhibits, Operations, and Marketing to integrate educational content throughout the Center.

Leadership & Administration

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate education staff, volunteers, interns, and seasonal instructors.
  • Manage department budget, schedules, purchasing, and program resources.
  • Assist supervisor with the development of department goals, policies, and performance measures.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies and child safety standards.

Community Engagement

  • Build partnerships with schools, libraries, community organizations, and businesses.
  • Represent the Discovery Center through outreach, presentations, and community events.
  • Support grant writing, fundraising, and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, STEM, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Five years of experience in education, program management, museums, science centers, or nonprofit leadership.
  • Experience supervising staff and volunteers.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and pass a background check.

Preferred

  • Experience in informal STEM education or museums.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Knowledge of Idaho educational standards.
  • Database experience (Altru preferred).
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and move throughout classrooms and exhibit spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
