The Program Department supports the mission of Shaker Village by inspiring our guests through stories, activities and exhibits across the SVPH landscape that connect to our heritage, community and the environment while expanding our understanding of the legacy of the Pleasant Hill Shakers.
Job Summary
With the support of the Collections & Education Director (CED), the Education Manager will develop, implement, and expand entertaining educational and recreational programs for Shaker Village guests. The Education Manager will also serve as the primary administrative coordinator and direct supervisor for the Program Team/Education Department.
The Education Manager will provide day-to-day supervision of the Program Team, which includes a staff of Program Specialists (3; full-time), Village Interpreters (5-10; part-time/seasonal), Day Camp Counselors (4-6; seasonal), interns, and volunteers. The Education Manager will be responsible for monthly staffing schedules, payroll, and staff coaching/evaluations (in concert with the CED). The Education Manager will also take the lead in implementing daily programming (Daily Adventures), coordinating adult and youth groups with the support of SVPH’s Sales Team, and providing logistical support and oversight for SVPH’s Workshops, Discovery Treks, and Night Nikes. The position will assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of a customer-service oriented staff, including both existing SVPH employees and new hires.
The Education Manager’s long-term focus will be on growing SVPH’s youth and family-centric program offerings. This includes refining and developing content for schools (field trips, virtual/outreach programs, and pre- and post-visit materials), homeschool groups (organized events, learning kits, and self-directed materials for use onsite at SVPH), and families (exhibit collateral, age-appropriate tours and programming, independent exploration materials). The Education Manager will also take a key leadership role in SVPH’s summer Day Camp, providing administrative oversight, supervision, and staffing support during its operation in June-July.
Skills and Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to supervise staff members of diverse skills and backgrounds.
Experience developing and delivering programs to audiences of all ages and abilities. Prior experience developing K-12 curriculum or developing lesson plans preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to professionally and effectively communicate with supervisor, other SVPH staff, and SVPH guests.
Have a positive "can-do" attitude and the capability to implement fresh approaches or new processes.
Ability to complete projects and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational skills and the ability to follow through on commitments.
Shows flexibility and creativity in support of all Shaker Village activities and goals.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
Optional/preferred: Demonstrated experience in overseeing a day camp.
Optional/preferred: Knowledge of Kentucky or Shaker history.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience. Master’s degree in history, public history, education, environmental education or other relevant field preferred.
Must have at least 2-4 years’ experience in administering and/or providing programs to the public in one of the following areas: public history, K-12 education, environmental or outdoor education, camps, or a related field.
Must have at least 2-4 years of supervisory/managerial experience.
Mental and Physical Requirements
Ability to maintain visual attention for considerable lengths of time. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.
Ability to sit, stand and walk for considerable lengths of time (3+ hours).
Must be able to ascend and descend stairs on a frequent basis.
Ability to operate computers and general office equipment.
Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. and lift and/or move heavier loads as needed.
Regular access to a personal vehicle and valid driver’s license.
Working Environment and Conditions
This position involves working in both indoor and outdoor environments, during all seasons and types of weather conditions.
This position required non-traditional work hours, including regular work on weekends, evenings, and holidays. The Education Manager will likely be expected to work Tuesdays-Saturdays or Sundays-Thursdays.
This position is subject to a background check and drug testing.
$45,000+/- annual salary
