Job Description

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (SVPH) is on a mission to inspire generations through DISCOVERY, by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. SVPH is committed to bridging historic preservation, land conservation, engaged learning and warm hospitality to present an unrivaled destination experience.

Home to the Shaker community of Pleasant Hill from 1805 until 1923, SVPH manages the country’s largest private collection of original nineteenth-century buildings and is the largest National Historic Landmark in Kentucky. Onsite amenities at SVPH include overnight accommodations, dining and catering services, retail shops, event and meeting venues, historical exhibitions and tours, farm and garden area, nature preserve, multi-use trail system, equestrian stable and an extensive calendar of special programs, activities and events.

The Program Department supports the mission of Shaker Village by inspiring our guests through stories, activities and exhibits across the SVPH landscape that connect to our heritage, community and the environment while expanding our understanding of the legacy of the Pleasant Hill Shakers.

Job Summary

With the support of the Collections & Education Director (CED), the Education Manager will develop, implement, and expand entertaining educational and recreational programs for Shaker Village guests. The Education Manager will also serve as the primary administrative coordinator and direct supervisor for the Program Team/Education Department.

The Education Manager will provide day-to-day supervision of the Program Team, which includes a staff of Program Specialists (3; full-time), Village Interpreters (5-10; part-time/seasonal), Day Camp Counselors (4-6; seasonal), interns, and volunteers. The Education Manager will be responsible for monthly staffing schedules, payroll, and staff coaching/evaluations (in concert with the CED). The Education Manager will also take the lead in implementing daily programming (Daily Adventures), coordinating adult and youth groups with the support of SVPH’s Sales Team, and providing logistical support and oversight for SVPH’s Workshops, Discovery Treks, and Night Nikes. The position will assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of a customer-service oriented staff, including both existing SVPH employees and new hires.

The Education Manager’s long-term focus will be on growing SVPH’s youth and family-centric program offerings. This includes refining and developing content for schools (field trips, virtual/outreach programs, and pre- and post-visit materials), homeschool groups (organized events, learning kits, and self-directed materials for use onsite at SVPH), and families (exhibit collateral, age-appropriate tours and programming, independent exploration materials). The Education Manager will also take a key leadership role in SVPH’s summer Day Camp, providing administrative oversight, supervision, and staffing support during its operation in June-July.
