Job summary

Aiken County Public Schools is seeking a General Counsel to provide comprehensive legal services to the Board of Education, superintendent, and district staff. The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of constitutional law, South Carolina school law, and state education statutes, and will guide the district through regulatory compliance.

The position demands advising on legal matters, drafting and reviewing district documents, and representing the district in legal matters.

Qualifications

• Duly licensed by the State of South Carolina to practice law.
• Specialized training and/or experience in school-law issues preferred.
• Established practice with progressively more responsible cases.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal opinions, legal interpretations, and recommendations to the Board of Education and district administration for compliance with regulations.
• Reviews, edits, and creates district documents for legally compliant communication.
• Represents the Aiken County Public School District in legal matters reflecting Board desires.
• Advises district staff concerning legal matters to maintain compliance with regulations.
• Provides staff development on legal responsibilities.
• Attends meetings at district, regional, and state levels to convey/gather information for duties.
• Prepares a wide variety of written materials documenting activities and policy changes.
• Provides legal services to the Board of Education and for the superintendent and staff on District legal matters.
• Performs such other duties consistent with professional competence as the Board may assign.

Education

South Carolina law license required

School-law experience preferred

Experience with legal practice

Board/administration liaison experience
