Houston ISD's Assistant General Counsel supports the Legal Department by providing timely, high-quality legal advice and service to the Board of Education, Superintendent, and District leadership on federal and state education-related matters.
The position concentrates on litigation, including employment and special education matters; represents the District in judicial, administrative, and regulatory proceedings; and helps ensure lawful, mission-driven decision-making across the District.
The Assistant General Counsel supports the Legal Department in providing timely, high-quality legal advice, services, and professional development to the Board of Education, Superintendent, and District leadership regarding federal and state laws, regulations, and legal issues affecting public education. The position focuses on litigation, including employment and special education matters; represents the District and administrative staff in judicial, administrative, and regulatory proceedings; coordinates responses to investigations by state and federal agencies; and helps ensure lawful, effective, and mission-focused decision-making across the District.
EDUCATION
Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association-accredited law school. Preferred: Graduation from a top-tier law school, judicial clerkship experience, law review membership, or other evidence of outstanding legal scholarship and analytical ability.
WORK EXPERIENCE
8+ years. Preferred: Experience representing public entities, including in the areas of employment, transactional, business/commercial, governance, and/or constructional law
