About The Role
The Editorial Manager, Social (US) oversees the daily management of The Athletic’s US Social Media team. Responsibilities include refining processes, developing distribution strategies across brand social accounts, managing schedules, workload, and team development. The role reports to the UK social media lead and director of audience, and involves managing seven direct reports. This is a remote position for candidates in the US or Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and develop The Athletic’s US Social team daily.
  • Implement social strategy, create social-first content, amplify top articles during key sporting moments.
  • Enhance brand awareness with a consistent voice and design assets reflecting The Athletic’s look and feel.
  • Report on social KPIs and share best practices with the wider team.
  • Build relationships with editorial leadership, vertical editors, partners, and other departments for content programming and social strategies.
  • Monitor trends in media, sports, and social media to keep The Athletic current.
  • Create case studies and analyze major breaking news, trending moments, and events.
  • Pitch trending social media items to newsroom editors.
Requirements
  • 5+ years in sports social media.
  • 3+ years managing and developing a team.
  • Experience in a sports newsroom preferred.
  • Extensive content creation and distribution experience on platforms like Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, and exploring new platforms such as BlueSky, WhatsApp, Reddit.
  • Growth mindset and openness to experimentation.
  • Ability to multitask across initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of The Athletic’s voice, content, and brand positioning.
  • Data analysis skills and a data-driven approach to goals.

Salary range: $120,000 - $130,000 USD. Total compensation varies based on experience, skills, and location, and may include benefits. Benefits include comprehensive health plans, savings accounts, 401k with match, paid time off, and parental leave. International candidates receive similar benefits.
