Job summary

Bloomsbury Publishing USA is seeking an Editor to help develop a romance list under the Bloomsbury Archer imprint. The successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of this genre and its subgenres, as well as a history as a reader and editor of this type of book.

Established relationships with agents in this space is a must. The Editor will seek out, evaluate, acquire, develop, and edit manuscripts with high-quality storytelling, diverse viewpoints, compelling hooks, and commercial appeal.

Qualifications

  • Four-year undergraduate degree required.
  • At least five years of experience in an editorial role at a publishing imprint, including acquisitions.
  • Excellent attention to detail, quality, process, and organization.
  • Strong knowledge of the romance book market.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and show initiative.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire approximately ten projects per year.
  • Develop and edit manuscripts within the romance genre.
  • Evaluate materials for acquisition and provide editorial feedback.
  • Maintain relationships with authors and agents.
  • Coordinate all stages of publication from acquisition to publication.

Bloomsbury Publishing is seeking an Editor to help develop a romance list under the Bloomsbury Archer imprint. The successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of this genre (and its subgenres), as well as a history as a reader and editor of this type of book. Established relationships with agents in this space is a must.


The Editor will seek out, evaluate, acquire, develop, and edit manuscripts with high-quality storytelling, diverse viewpoints, compelling hooks, and commercial appeal. They will bring each book in with a clear vision for its development, its audience, and its potential. This Editor will be responsible for supervising new titles through the entirety of the editing process and will coordinate all stages of book production, from acquisition to publication. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and within a group environment are necessary.



Responsibilities


  • Acquire approximately ten projects per year

  • Develop and edit a varied range of manuscripts within the romance genre

  • Read, evaluate, and develop materials for acquisition

  • Maintain and develop relationships with authors and agents

  • Work with authors on content, style, and format of publication and provide them with editorial feedback

  • Attend weekly editorial and design meetings to discuss incoming and existing acquisitions

  • Read submissions and provide feedback for editorial colleagues

  • Negotiate purchase of manuscripts with authors and agents

  • Write catalog/cover copy and title information sheets for frontlist titles

  • Generate profit and loss estimates

  • Collaborate with design and production on style, schedule, format, and aesthetics of publication; prepare manuscripts for production

  • Work with marketing and publicity departments to care for authors

  • Represent individual titles in interdepartmental meetings

  • Perform special projects as required



Requirements


  • Candidate must have a four-year undergraduate degree

  • At least five years of experience in an editorial capacity at a publishing imprint, including acquisition experience

  • Excellent attention to detail, quality, process, and organization

  • Strong and up-to-date knowledge of the market for romance books

  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and show initiative

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe



Location

(Hybrid) Candidates must reside in the NY tri-state area and be able to work in the office 2 days per week.
