Job summary

Alamogordo Public Schools is seeking an Education Assistant for Desert Star Elementary to support SPED students in a low-incidence program. This is a nine-month position with placement on the Educational Assistant Salary Schedule.

The role requires working closely with students, teachers, and the school nurse to implement instructional plans and ensure student safety. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, 48 college credits preferred, and the ability to obtain Level III Assistant

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide a well-organized classroom environment in which students can access instructional programs and materials.
• Assist SPED students with tasks including spoon feeding, positioning, and maintaining safety.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
• Operate audio visual equipment and office machines as needed.
• Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents/guardians, staff, and supervisors.
• Prepare simple letters, memos, or notes as part of daily duties.

Job Snapshot:

To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Minimum of 48 college credits preferred
• Ability to obtain Level III Assistant licensure (appropriate college credits or pass test for licensure)
• Experience working with students preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

• Ability to provide services to special education students including, but not limited to, spoon/tube feeding (consult with child's SLP for individual needs), lifting and positioning, signs/symptoms of child needing suctioning and when to notify the school nurse, signs/symptoms of colostomy infection and when to notify the school nurse, signs/symptoms of tracheostomy concerns and when to notify the school nurse, and proper technique for diaper changing and toileting.
• Computer data entry/word processing skills preferable
• Knowledge of spelling and proper grammar
• Ability to read and interpret routine information
• Ability to operate audio visual equipment and office machines
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information and records
• Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and relationships with students, parents/guardians, staff, and supervisors/administrators
• Ability to write simple letters, memos, notes, or instructions
• Ability to perform essential job functions and job task requirements

Position Available:

November 2, 2026

Salary:

Nine months (185 days) per contract year and appropriate placement on the Educational Assistant Salary Schedule. The work calendar is subject to change based on any Board approved revisions that may or may not be Permanent.

Conditions of Employment:

Ability to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and, upon an offer of employment, complete an Employee's Statement of Health and submit to a functional capacity evaluation at the District's expense to determine ability to perform job-related functions and fitness for duty.
