Job description

Summary:

Provides clinical patient care assessment, initiation, modifications, and weaning of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), also known as Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS), for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in collaboration with a licensed physician with ECMO expertise.

Responsibilities:
  1. Evaluates, assesses, and performs prescribed clinical procedures and therapies as ordered by a licensed medical provider, under the supervision of the ECMO Manager and Respiratory Care Supervisors.
  2. Analyzes clinical data to determine appropriate therapy, offers care recommendations, and modifies therapy based on patient response, understanding indications, contraindications, and the safe use of pharmacological agents and blood products via ECMO.
  3. Assists in ECMO initiation, including assembly, priming, and evaluation of the circuit's acid/base status.
  4. Adjusts ECMO parameters based on patient data, maintains prescribed settings, and participates in bedside rounds to review and recommend treatment plans.
  5. Manages medications and blood products through ECMO, monitors anticoagulation therapy, and ensures patient safety during transport.
  6. Provides clinical instruction to healthcare staff on ECMO equipment and procedures, evaluates equipment functionality, and maintains emergency ECMO supplies.
  7. Participates in training, competency assessments, and quality improvement activities related to ECMO.
  8. When not functioning as an ECMO Specialist, performs general respiratory therapy, including complex respiratory procedures, mechanical ventilation, and emergency response.
  9. Supports research projects, maintains infection control standards, and documents care activities accurately.
  10. Participates in departmental meetings, education, drills, and maintains ongoing professional development.
  11. Ensures patient confidentiality and complies with all hospital policies and standards.
Qualifications:
  • Active Rhode Island Respiratory Therapy license.
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care within 6 months of hire.
  • Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy (Bachelor's preferred).
  • Minimum one year of critical care respiratory experience across all age groups.
  • Successful completion of RIH Respiratory Care Department ECMO training.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
  • Current BLS, PALS, and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association.
  • Proficiency in advanced respiratory care practices, blood product administration, and staff training.
  • Ability to maintain minimum pump hours annually and function as an ECMO backup or alternate supervisor.
