Description

Under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy management and according to UNCH and departmental policies and procedures, the ECMO Specialist is responsible for monitoring and troubleshooting the ECMO circuit and related equipment during treatment. Collaborates with bedside RNs, physicians, and the healthcare team to coordinate care for complex patients.

Responsibilities
  1. Planning and Managing Care: Independently plans, delivers, and evaluates safe, individualized, age, and culture-specific care for patients on ECMO, ensuring adequate perfusion, acid-base balance, hemodynamic stability, oxygenation, and ventilation as ordered.
  2. Continuum of Care Planning: Coordinates comprehensive care planning, consulting with healthcare team members to provide complete information for complex cases.
  3. Patient and Family Education: Develops, evaluates, and revises individualized teaching plans for patients and families.
  4. Problem Solving: Identifies issues, participates in solution finding, and implements solutions, modeling effective problem-solving skills.
  5. Communication and Collaboration: Communicates effectively across care levels, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, and manages conflicts.
  6. Continuous Learning: Engages in educational activities annually, pursues advanced education, and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
Other Information

Education: Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or Nursing from an accredited program.

Licensure/Certification: Licensed Respiratory Therapist by NC Respiratory Care Board and registry eligible, or licensed RN in North Carolina.

Experience: Minimum two years as a Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist.

Skills/Abilities: Advanced knowledge of extracorporeal support principles, excellent communication, critical thinking, stress management, and flexibility to work shifts.
