UPMC Pinnacle is seeking a Lead ECMO Specialist to lead their team in Harrisburg, PA.

The Lead ECMO Specialist performs advanced technical work under the supervision of a licensed physician, supporting and treating the cardiopulmonary system. Responsibilities include the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of ECMO circuits and accessories, primarily in ICU and operating room settings, with potential hospital-wide and transport roles. Travel between UPMC hospitals and participation in a rotating on-call schedule are required. The role requires holding and maintaining all ECMO Specialist requisites and responsibilities.

This position involves 12-hour shifts, three to four days a week, including rotating weekends.

Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure billing and service verification for ECMO and related procedures.
  2. Maintain continuing education, licensing, and competencies.
  3. Coordinate with attending physicians and demonstrate clinical ECMO skills.
  4. Operate and maintain ECMO equipment proficiently.
  5. Maintain proficiency with ECLS techniques including ECMO, VAD, CRRT, among others.
  6. Administer medications and blood components via extracorporeal circuits as directed.
  7. Participate in the call schedule and assist with patient transportation.
  8. Manage departmental budget, supplies, and equipment; ensure accurate data reporting and quality improvement.
  9. Contribute to research, education, and quality projects; serve as a role model and leader.
  10. Precept new staff and support team competencies.
  11. Meet licensure and certification requirements, including ELSO and AmSECT certifications.
  12. Travel as needed between hospitals to deliver ECMO services.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse, Certified Clinical Perfusionist, or Respiratory Therapist with ≥6 years of clinical experience, including ≥4 years in ECMO care.
  • Strong computer skills and effective communication skills.
  • Completion of ELSO qualified ECMO training and certification exams.
Licensure and Certifications:
  • Current Pennsylvania license (RN, RT, or Perfusionist).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • BLS, ACLS, and other specified certifications.
  • ELSO Pediatric and Adult ECMO certifications or equivalents.
  • PALS preferred.
