Job summary

Detroit Community Schools is seeking a full-time Earth Science Teacher with Michigan certification and endorsement in Earth/Space Science to lead engaging, standards-based instruction.

The teacher will plan lessons aligned to Earth science standards, assess student progress, and maintain an inclusive learning environment that promotes inquiry and critical thinking. Collaboration with staff and ongoing professional development will be expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Earth Science curriculum and scientific inquiry.
  • Ability to develop engaging, standards-aligned lessons and assessments.

Job description

Detroit Community Schools is hiring a full time Earth Science Teacher. Must have Michigan teacher certification and endorsement in the subject.

Job Summary

The Earth Science Teacher is responsible for creating an engaging and rigorous learning environment that develops students' understanding of Earth's systems, natural processes, and the relationship between Earth and its environment. This position delivers standards-aligned instruction that promotes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving while supporting the academic and personal growth of students.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Earth Science lessons that meet the academic needs of students.
  • Teach concepts related to geology, Earth's systems, weather and climate, natural resources, astronomy, and other areas of Earth Science as appropriate.
  • Develop assessments and monitor student performance through tests, quizzes, projects, laboratory activities, and other appropriate methods.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and individual student needs.
  • Foster scientific inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.
  • Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive classroom environment.
  • Incorporate hands-on investigations, laboratory activities, demonstrations, and technology to enhance student learning.
  • Monitor student progress, maintain accurate academic records, and provide timely feedback.
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school staff regarding student progress and academic concerns.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, analyze student data, and support school improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in school activities, meetings, professional development, and other assigned duties.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.

Cognitive Demands:

  • Supervision of multiple students in classroom and laboratory settings.
  • Establishing routines and procedures that promote student engagement and safety.
  • Creating and implementing instructional plans aligned with curriculum standards.
  • Analyzing student performance and adapting instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment, particularly during laboratory activities.
  • Participating in continuous professional development.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom and laboratory.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, or move instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasionally bend, kneel, squat, or reach while assisting students or preparing instructional materials.
  • Safely handle and organize laboratory materials and equipment as required.
  • Withstand moderate noise levels in classroom and laboratory environments.
  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.
  • Assist/lift students, as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Science Education, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
  • Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with an appropriate Earth/Space Science endorsement required.
  • Strong knowledge of Earth Science curriculum, scientific inquiry, and instructional best practices.
  • Ability to develop engaging lessons that promote scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Excellent classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning, instruction, and assessment.
  • Proficiency in integrating instructional technology and hands-on learning experiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and school leadership to support student success.
