Detroit Community Schools is seeking a full-time Civics/Economics Teacher in Detroit, MI. The successful candidate must hold Michigan certification with a Social Studies endorsement and will deliver standards-aligned instruction to high school students, fostering critical thinking and civic engagement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Social Studies, History, Political Science, Economics, Education, or related field.
• Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with Social Studies endorsement.
• Strong knowledge of Civics, Economics, government, and social studies curriculum and instructional practices.
• Ability to facilitate engaging discussions and develop lessons that promote critical thinking and civic awareness.
• Excellent classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Civics and Economics to high school students.
• Create lesson plans and activities that promote critical thinking and informed decision-making.
• Teach concepts related to government structures, civic participation, rights and responsibilities, economics, and personal finance.
• Encourage respectful discussion and thoughtful analysis of diverse perspectives and civic issues.
• Develop and administer assessments (assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, presentations).
• Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning styles and needs.
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate academic records with timely feedback.
• Incorporate current events, primary sources, technology, and other resources to enhance learning.

Job Summary

The High School Civics / Economics Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-aligned instruction that develops students' understanding of government, citizenship, economics, and their role in society. This position fosters critical thinking, informed decision-making, and meaningful discussion while creating a supportive classroom environment that prepares students for college, careers, and responsible civic participation.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Civics and Economics to high school students.
• Create lesson plans and learning activities that promote critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving, and informed decision-making.
• Teach concepts related to government structures, civic participation, rights and responsibilities, economic systems, personal finance, and current economic issues.
• Encourage respectful discussion and thoughtful analysis of diverse perspectives and civic issues.

• Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and individual student needs.

• Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.

• Participate in school activities, meetings, professional development, and other assigned duties.

• Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.
• Assist/lift students, as necessary.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Social Studies, History, Political Science, Economics, Education, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
• Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Social Studies endorsement required.
• Strong knowledge of Civics, Economics, government, and social studies curriculum and instructional practices.
• Ability to facilitate engaging discussions and develop lessons that promote critical thinking, civic awareness, and informed decision-making.
• Excellent classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning, instruction, and assessment.
• Proficiency in integrating instructional technology and real-world resources into instruction.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and school leadership to support student success.
