Title: Early Learning Academy Classroom Assistant

Reports to: Out-of-School Time Coordinator or Senior Manager of Community Programs

Position Summary: Classroom Assistants are responsible for the safety, well-being and supervision of students, and to assist the Preschool Instructor and Assistant Instructor in performing functions necessary for established routines and lessons/activities in the Early Learning Academy Preschool.

Work Year: Ten (10) months

Work Hours: Varies by position

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bargaining Unit: Non-unit

Pay Grade: Early Learning Academy Classroom Assistant Hourly Rate

Qualifications:
  1. Sixty (60) college credits preferred; work experience may be substituted.
  2. Coursework in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
  3. Experience and/ or strong interest in working with school age children.
  4. Ability to facilitate small group activities.
  5. Holds CPI, CPR and EpiPen certification, or is willing to be trained.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively in a school community.
  7. Hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license with no serious violations.
  8. Provide a medical certification demonstrating the ability to perform the essential job functions and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.3(a).
  9. Troubleshooting: Be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.
  10. Critical Thinking: When diagnosing problems, think critically in their process of resolving the issue.
  11. Knowledge: Be able to perform basic math; understand grammar and punctuation; and read and comprehend information. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: solve practical problems and facilitate group discussions.
  12. Skills: Be able to communicate clearly and effectively, demonstrates basic reading, writing and mathematical skills, demonstrates patience and compassion, maintains a positive and encouraging demeanor, demonstrates strong organizational skills, pays close attention to detail, demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, is capable of maintaining a flexible schedule and supervising small groups of students, manages time efficiently, demonstrates knowledge of computer skills, demonstrates ability to think creatively and innovatively, works well with a variety of individuals, and demonstrates knowledge of school standards and code of conduct.
  13. Ability: Schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapt to changing work priorities; display tact and courtesy; establish and maintain effective working relationships; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities; work as part of a team; and, comply with Board of Education policies and regulations.
  14. Possess ability to work effectively and efficiently alone, and cooperatively with other personnel.
  15. Be self-driven, possess excellent initiative, integrity, and good moral character.
  16. Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  17. Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
  18. Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  19. Provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1 during the initial six-month employment period.
  20. Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test in accordance with N.J.A.C 63-4A-4.
  21. Other qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools or her/his designee may find appropriate.

Job Functions & Responsibilities:
  1. Supervision of students in the Early Learning Academy.
  2. Provide a safe, secure, productive and positive environment for students.
  3. Maintains the safety and social and emotional well-being of students.
  4. Assists the Activity Leader in performing functions necessary for established routines and lessons/activities.
  5. Escort students through the school for arrival/dismissal and assist the Activity Leader with dismissal at parent-pickup point.
  6. Assist children in the performance of tasks including:
    • Preparing materials
    • Helping with snacks
    • Arrival and dismissal (hats, coats, bookbags, etc.)
    • Proper handwashing
  7. Assist children during mid-day break and lunch.
  8. Actively participates in staff development opportunities designed to contribute to personal and professional growth.
  9. Perform other duties which may be within the scope of his/her employment and certifications as may be assigned by his/her supervisors under authority of the Board of Education.

  4. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
  5. Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
  6. Employees in this position work in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredictable requirements or demands.
  7. The nature of the work environment may produce moderate levels of stress.
