Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Child Care Education Program is operated by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), in the School of Health and Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. HDFS is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service regarding human development and close relationships across the lifespan. Our objectives are to educate the next generation of HDFS professionals and scholars, to generate new knowledge, and to foster the well-being of individuals and families in their everyday lives.
The Child Care Education Program provides a setting where university students can gain experiential and hands-on learning, as well as have opportunities to apply content knowledge from their courses. Students are provided the opportunity to complete full-time student teaching, participate in weekly practicum placements, complete one-time observations for class assignments, and find part-time employment through work/study programs.

Position Summary:

Early Childhood Education Teachers Assistants in the Child Care Education Program will work in a classroom as part of the consistent teaching team. They are responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher with curriculum planning in classrooms for young children, maintaining licensing and accreditation standards, creating a respectful high-quality classroom environment, caregiving routines, classroom activities, supervising groups of children indoors and outdoors, and light housekeeping duties such as serving or cleaning after meals.

Minimum Qualifications:

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK.

Preferred Qualifications:

An Associates Degree in Early Childhood; or a related field or higher and 6 months of experience working in a licensed childcare setting; or a high school diploma with 2 years of experience in a licensed childcare setting.

Alternate Option:

If no applicants apply who meet the required competency level and training & experience requirements, then management may consider other applicants. Salary would be determined based on competencies, equity, budget, and market considerations.

Key Responsibility:

Meet or exceed licensing and accreditation standards while providing a high quality classroom environment for young children.

Essential Tasks:
  • Follow guidelines and requirements provided by NC Div. of Child Development and Early Education, as well as standards of the NAEYC Academy for Early Education.

Assist the lead teacher in maintain up-to-date documentation on individual child assessment of growth and development for children in assigned classroom.

Essential Tasks:
  • Assist the teaching by collecting anecdotal notes of each child’s progress.
  • Become proficient in connecting this child assessment information to the developmental continuum as presented in the NC Foundations of Early Learning
Key Responsibility:

Assist the lead teacher in planning daily curriculum using observations of children’s development and interests.

  • Participate in daily team planning time
  • Assist with planning curriculum activities based on observations of children
  • Assist with implementing the daily activities
  • Assist with the preparation and cleaning up of daily activities

Assist the leader teacher in the creating of a safe, respectful and nurturing learning environment

Essential Tasks:
  • Participate in active supervision both indoors and outdoors
  • Assist the lead teacher in building relationships with students and families

Assists the teacher with caregiving routines and light housekeeping duties

Essential Tasks:
  • Assist students with feeding, dressing and toileting as necessary.
  • Assist with meal set up and clean up
  • Assist the teacher in the care and cleaning of learning materials both indoors and outdoors.
