Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to perform laboratory testing of biological specimens in an acute care setting across multiple specialty areas using manual or automated techniques. Applies independent judgment to report timely and accurate results to support patient care.

Responsibilities include calibration/maintenance of instruments, quality control, specimen collection across age groups, and collaboration with phlebotomy and support staff.

Responsibilities

• Performs, evaluates, and monitors laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols, selecting and performing additional procedures when indicated.
• Evaluates results for clinical significance, validity and appropriateness. Follows prescribed policy in reporting and notification of test results.
• Performs and documents calibration and maintenance of instruments and equipment. Performs and documents quality control; evaluates QC results and takes corrective action when indicated.
• Recognizes indicators of test/instrument malfunction and uses prescribed strategies or notifies supervisor.
• Collects specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
• Provides technical assistance to Phlebotomists and support staff.
• Assists in improving quality and efficiency of lab procedures, ensuring compliance with accrediting standards.
• Performs internal and external proficiency testing and supports disease-specific accreditations.
• Provides direct support for critical care departments during high acuity events.
