Job summary

Gaston County Government’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division handles disposal, recycling, and related programs for the county. The position in Gastonia is anticipated with a hiring range of $20.43–$24.26 per hour and requires operation of heavy equipment among other duties.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of heavy equipment operations experience.
• SWANA landfill operations specialist within 6 months of hire.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Operates compactor on the MSW working face. Places garbage in correct location, builds lifts, and sideslopes.
• Operates bulldozers, graders, loaders, excavators, dump trucks, and/or compactors as needed.
• Performs inspection and completes daily inspection log of equipment operated; checks fluids and greases; provides maintenance support.
• Excavates and moves dirt and debris per defined procedure.
• Performs visual inspection and routine maintenance of equipment.
• Reports unsafe conditions or hazardous materials; may assist at events like Household Hazardous Waste collections.
• Removes rock from new construction areas.
• Helps maintain haul roads; directs traffic; enforces safety on site.
• Provides general information to the public.
• Installs fencing and cuts trees and brush.
