Job summary

The City of Burien seeks a Combo Building Inspector / Plans Examiner to review residential and less complex commercial plans and perform field inspections. You will work between the office and the site, ensuring code compliance and providing guidance to contractors and the public.

Ideal candidates hold an Associate degree in building inspection technology with 3 years of related experience and ICC certifications, and are prepared to obtain additional ICC/IAPMO credentials within set timelines.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in building inspection technology (or equivalent) and 3 years of building/construction/plan review experience.
• Current ICC Certification as a Residential Building Inspector.
• Ability to earn ICC Residential Plans Examiner certification within 12 months.
• Ability to earn ICC/IAPMO Residential Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector within 6 months.
• WA driver's license with satisfactory driving record.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Responsibilities

• Review plans for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, energy conservation, and accessibility codes.
• Inspect residential and commercial construction at various stages to ensure work matches documents.
• Issue notices of correction and permits and certificates of occupancy for routine projects.
• Provide building code guidance to contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and the public.
• Assist as permit technician: review applications, route blueprints, issue permits.
• Attend pre-construction meetings and assist Code Compliance Officers.
