Job summary

The State of Washington's Yakima Valley School in Selah, WA is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 2 to perform skilled repairs across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related systems. You will read plans, estimate materials, and respond to service requests to keep the campus safe and functional.

We value journey-level tradespeople with at least four years of experience or completion of a skilled mechanical apprenticeship, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver's license.

DSHS YVS – Maintenance Mechanic 2

Join our team as a Maintenance Mechanic 2 at Yakima Valley School (YVS) in Selah! As a journey-level tradesperson within our Maintenance and Operations Division (MOD), you’ll help keep the campus safe, functional, and well maintained by performing skilled maintenance and repairs across a variety of building systems and equipment. From HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems to painting, carpentry, grounds maintenance, and equipment repairs, your work will play an important role in supporting a safe and reliable environment for the people we serve and the staff who support them.

About Yakima Valley School

Yakima Valley School in Selah, WA, is a certified nursing facility providing individualized care and support for people with developmental disabilities. Residents enjoy a safe, home-like environment with access to medical, therapeutic, and recreational services. The campus features comfortable cottages, scenic grounds, and a variety of programs that promote independence and community involvement. The school also offers respite care and crisis stabilization services for individuals and families in need.

Some of what you'll do:
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment, including laundry, kitchen, and air-conditioning equipment.
  • Maintain, operate, and repair electrical, mechanical, structural, and utility distribution systems.
  • Monitor safety, fire protection, and environmental control equipment to help ensure building systems are operating safely and effectively.
  • Respond to service requests, troubleshoot malfunctions, and take preventative or emergency action to restore equipment and systems.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and other shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Read and work from plans, sketches, drawings, and other job‑related specifications.
  • Determine and estimate the materials needed to complete maintenance and repair work.
Desired skills, knowledge, and abilities:
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the mechanical trades.
  • Ability to perform skilled maintenance, repair, and related work safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and the ability to recognize and address potential safety hazards.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with management, coworkers, clients, and the public.
  • Ability to use basic computer skills and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to dress appropriately for the work being performed, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
Who should apply?

We are searching for professionals with:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • At least four years of experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanical trade.
Additional information:
  • Work schedule: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary.
