Job summary

Maine Department of the Secretary of State is seeking a Driver License Examiner in Portland, Maine. This role administers road skills, written and oral tests for Class A, B, C licenses, motorcycles, and school buses, including vision screening and diagnostics.

Ideal candidates will have two years of public-facing experience, knowledge of Maine motor vehicle laws, and strong attention to detail. Travel statewide may be required; the work week is Monday through Friday.

Qualifications

• Two years of work experience with public contact and knowledge of Maine motor vehicle laws and regulations.
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Ability to pass a background check and work in a public safety/government setting.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-trip vehicle evaluations and administer driving skills tests.
• Administer and score road skills tests for multiple vehicle classes and special examinations.
• Administer and score written and oral examinations on traffic laws and test results.
• Perform vision screening to determine visual acuity for license issuance.
• Operate licensing equipment and record examination results accurately.
• Explain applicable laws, rules and procedures to licensure applicants.
