Job summary

The Township of Van Buren Public Services seeks a capable Maintenance Worker to perform custodial, maintenance and improvement activities for township facilities and grounds. You will join a team handling mowing, snow plowing, cemetery grounds, and minor construction, reporting to management with minimal supervision.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, 2+ years in maintenance, and a valid CDL Class A plus Michigan driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional training preferred.
• Two+ years in building and grounds maintenance preferred.
• CDL Class A license and Michigan driver’s license required.
• Must perform duties with minimal supervision and be willing to work overtime, evenings, and/or weekends.

Overview

Under the direction and supervision of Public Services management, performs custodial, maintenance and improvement activities for overall township facility and grounds maintenance. Performs a variety of routine and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, custodial and repair activities involving township buildings, facilities, parking lots, grounds and equipment. While general assignments and goals are received from management, the employee must be able to satisfactorily perform the work without close supervision.Employee interacts in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees, visitors, and citizens of the Charter Township of Van Buren and demonstrates the highest standards of internal and external customer service.

Responsibilities

An employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential job functions, duties and responsibilities. • Works with maintenance staff, custodians and contractors responsible for building and grounds maintenance operations, including but not limited to mowing all township owned facilities and parks properties.
• Maintains Township greenways, including snow plowing, tree and bed maintenance and grass cutting.
• Assists in burial site preparation.
• Performs cemetery grounds maintenance, including road accessibility and plot maintenance.
• Performs tree trimming, removal and replacement on township properties and replanting.
• Operates plow equipment, tractors, hi-lo and dump truck as needed to perform duties.
• Maintains parking lots including striping and pot hole repair.
• Performs facilities and grounds maintenance, repair and improvement projects as directed.
• Performs removal of trash or debris from roadways within the Township as directed.
• Performs custodial maintenance as directed.
• Maintains related records and data information.
• Investigates customer complaints regarding maintenance of facilities and grounds.

Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must possess high school diploma or equivalent. Some additional college or related technical training is preferred.
• Two or more years in building and grounds maintenance, custodial or equivalent experience is preferred.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid CDL Class A license with no restrictions and no major traffic offenses.
• Must maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license with no major traffic convictions.
• Must perform job duties with minimal need for direct supervision.
• Must be willing to work overtime, evenings, and/or weekends to accommodate the needs of the Township.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with staff, other governmental agencies and the public.
• Ability to work effectively within deadlines, under stress, and with changing work priorities.
• Basic knowledge of the equipment, methods, procedures, and tasks involved in building maintenance and repair.
• Basic knowledge of new developments in the field, new methods and techniques and current issues.
• Ability to operate a backhoe, mini-excavator, plow equipment, hi-lo and dump truck.
• Working knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in maintaining public facilities.
• Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in facility and grounds maintenance work.

• Ability to perform light to heavy lifting, carrying, loading and unloading of equipment and materials
• Basic knowledge and skill in rough carpentry.

Environment: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with some travel to different sites in and outside of the Township; when visiting parks or construction sites the incumbent may be required to walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, be exposed to all weather conditions, dust and pollen, and mechanical hazards such as construction equipment; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside Township boundaries to attend meetings.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions and mobility to work in an outdoor field setting; to lift 50 to 100 lbs, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; 5% of the time isoperatingoffice equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; operation of heavy construction equipment, getting in and out of trucks and other commercial vehicles, climbing in and out of confined spaces,to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
