Job summary

Graham Packaging Company is seeking a Downstream Process Support Engineer to partner with Central Engineering and Plant Operations to drive standardization, optimization and improvement in post-molding equipment across North America.

You will lead reliability-centered maintenance, deploy AI-enabled analytics and predictive maintenance, and mentor plant teams while traveling up to 75% to support sites.

Overview

The Downstream Process Support Engineer will work with the Central Engineering and Plant Operations teams across Graham Packaging North America to drive standardization, optimization, and improvement in Post-Molding Applications. These include trimmers, labelers, inspection systems, palletizers, case packers, case formers, partition inserters, robotics, and other automatic packaging equipment.

This role is responsible for improving the reliability, maintainability, and performance of downstream and supporting equipment. The engineer develops and deploys standardized engineering solutions, maintenance strategies, automation initiatives, and best practices that improve equipment uptime, reduce downtime, and optimize overall manufacturing performance.

In addition to traditional engineering support, this position is responsible for leveraging Automation Intelligence, digital technologies, AI-enabled analytics, predictive maintenance tools, and knowledge management systems to improve equipment performance, standardize engineering practices, and accelerate problem resolution across multiple manufacturing sites.

The Downstream Process Support Engineer will develop, implement, audit, and continuously improve proactive, preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance programs while leading root cause investigations, equipment optimization, technical training, and enterprise-wide knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Provide hands-on engineering support and deployment of post-molding process solutions.
  • Assess and recommend technical solutions to improve machine efficiency, reliability, and uptime.
  • Participate in installations, factory and plant acceptance tests, and system commissioning.
  • Build or re-purpose automatic trimming and packaging systems using new or existing hardware/software.
  • Provide reliability input for capital project activities.
  • Review equipment specifications and vendor quotes to ensure performance requirements are met.
  • Create technical work instructions, machine audits, and documentation for operation and maintenance.
  • Provide 24/7 remote technical support for plant operations as needed.
  • 75% travel

Standardization & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead and support standardization efforts across vertical units.
  • Use analytical tools, statistical methods, and problem-solving frameworks (A3, 8D) to address issues.
  • Use data-driven methods to track progress and sustain improvements.
  • Develop and maintain accurate records, reports, and action plans for short- and long-term issue resolution.
  • Develop and maintain standardized engineering documentation, equipment standards, Standard Operating Conditions (SOCs), maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, and best practice documentation.
  • Document root cause investigations, engineering modifications, and equipment improvements for enterprise-wide use.
  • Standardize maintenance practices across the North American manufacturing network.
  • Create training materials and technical documentation that improve organizational knowledge retention and reduce dependency on individual expertise.
  • Ensure engineering documentation remains current following equipment modifications, upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Training & Collaboration

  • Conduct classroom and on-the-floor training for trimming and packaging systems.
  • Train plant personnel on operational procedures such as changeovers and system adjustments.
  • Collaborate with plant operations and engineering teams to ensure optimal performance and alignment.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships across teams.
  • Submit weekly reports on engineering hours, travel, and expenses.

Automation Systems Knowledge

  • Maintain working knowledge of major post-molding packaging platforms, including:
    • Palletization systems: Zecchetti, OMS, Schneider, OMS
    • Trimming systems: Autotec, Lectro, Lyle, Maer, Mueller, Uniloy
    • Quality Inspection systems: Tornado, ALPs, Intravis, KMV
Qualifications

Education

  • BS or AAS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience improving processes with automatic post-molding systems (trimmers, labelers, inspection, palletizing, case packing, etc.).
  • At least 10 years of combined experience as a service technician, controls engineer, project manager, or plant engineer.
  • Prior experience with PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff, B&R) and servo control systems.
  • Experience in full lifecycle system implementation and integration.
  • Working knowledge of analytical and statistical quality tools.
  • Prior experience with PLCs a plus- Siemens, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff, B&R and Servo Control Systems
  • Prior experience with welding- Mig, Tig, and Stick.
  • Prior shop equipment experience- Mill, Layth, & basic power tools.
  • Installing high and low voltage systems.
  • Must be able to read mechanical and electrical prints

Technical Competencies

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Power BI, CAD, and automation software.
  • Ability to write clear technical documents, reports, specifications, and change bulletins.
  • Functional understanding of industrial safety practices (Lockout/Tagout, Energy Control, Electrical Safety).
  • Prior experience utilizing a CMMS system, SAP a plus.
  • Prior experience utilizing DMAIC principles a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Strong multitasking and organizational abilities with diligent follow-up.

The standard compensation for this role is $95,400 - 143,100. Salary offers will be determined based on final candidate qualifications, experience, skillset, and other relevant factors.

Compensation Statement

The expected salary range for the position described in this posting is made in accordance with the legal mandates of certain jurisdictions within the United States. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual qualifications and experience.
