The Northern Forest Center is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that operates across the 30-million-acre Northern Forest region spanning New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The organization serves as a leader in advancing community economic development and forest stewardship through collaborative leadership, innovative ideas, and expertise in program delivery, investment, project management, and public policy. The Center’s work is grounded in strong partnerships with rural communities and demonstrates a deep commitment to the region’s people, land, and future. The organization focuses on creating sustainable solutions for rural communities in the Northern Forest, addressing issues related to community revitalization, forest economy, stewardship, and housing. Through its initiatives, including the Northern Forest Fund, the Center has established itself as a recognized leader in impact investing and rural community development. The organization operates with a commitment to diversity and inclusion, making employment decisions based on qualifications, merit, and organizational needs without regard to protected characteristics. The Northern Forest Center’s mission encompasses providing collaborative leadership and expertise to ensure that the Northern Forest’s people and places thrive for generations to come. The organization partners with philanthropic and investment entities to mobilize capital that supports community-focused initiatives and environmental stewardship across the four-state region.

About this Role

The Donor and Investor Relations Officer (DIRO) plays a critical role in mobilizing the philanthropic and investment capital necessary to support the Northern Forest Center’s mission and strategic initiatives. This position builds upon the success of the Northern Forest Fund and the Center’s growing reputation as a leader in rural community development and impact investing. The DIRO will focus on the Portland, Seacoast/Southern New Hampshire, and Greater Boston regions, developing relationships with philanthropic and investment partners while expanding the Center’s network of champions and supporters. This officer will contribute to annual fundraising, planned giving, impact investment, and campaign initiatives that advance the Center’s five-year strategic vision. Working closely with the Director of Development, President, board members, volunteers, and colleagues across the organization, the DIRO will develop and execute relationship strategies that grow philanthropic support, expand investment participation, and strengthen long-term engagement with the Northern Forest Center. The position offers flexibility and is open to candidates interested in a reduced schedule with benefits prorated accordingly.
