Job summary

Bowhead seeks a Technical Writer in King George, VA to develop and deliver high-quality technical documentation for advanced technology research and DoD programs. You will translate complex engineering work into clear, compliant materials for government reviewers, while coordinating with engineering, cybersecurity, and program teams.

Applicants should have 7+ years in technical writing, experience with defense systems, and familiarity with MIL-STD and CDRLs.

Qualifications

7+ years of progressive technical writing experience, preferably for government or DoW programs.
Experience developing complex technical documentation for defense systems or advanced tech environments.
Strong understanding of system architecture, SDLC, test methodologies and workflows.
Proficiency with DoD documentation standards and MIL-STD guidance.
Ability to work in classified or restricted environments.

Responsibilities

Develop, write, edit, and maintain system specifications, interface documents, and manuals.
Translate complex R&D activities into clear, compliant docs for government reviewers.
Conduct structured interviews with engineers, architects, analysts, and program managers.
Apply DoD standards, configuration control, and style guidelines to deliverables.
Manage document version control and secure handling procedures.
Collaborate across engineering, testing, logistics, cybersecurity, and PM teams.
Prepare both classified and unclassified deliverables per policy.
Contribute to templates, workflows, and best-practice guidance.
