Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their experience in transportation to manage personnel and drive efficient operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to establish a safety-first culture in Transportation.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with Sr. Transportation Managers and develop plans to address gaps.
  4. Create an environment that encourages upward communication and motivates staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, promoting engagement, retention, and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach on targets, and manage disciplinary actions.
  7. Maintain accuracy and customer satisfaction by monitoring goals, troubleshooting delivery issues, and ensuring compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct routine safety meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.

Other duties include:

  • Scheduling shifts using planning tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel)
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned by the manager.

SUPERVISION: Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

RELATIONSHIPS: Collaborate with internal teams (Transportation, Warehouse, Sales) and external customers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Significant time on the road, exposure to noise and vibration, and time in an office environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • One year of supervising a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret operational data and basic computer skills.

Travel: Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training: High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications: Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
