Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation activities, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of active-duty service. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, training, and compliance.
  2. Team Development: Coach and develop drivers and transportation associates through training and performance discussions. Ensure proper training in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Conduct performance reviews, address gaps, and create improvement plans in collaboration with senior management.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster open communication, motivate team members, and promote achievement of department goals.
  5. Supervision: Oversee work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, drive engagement, retention, and embody company values.
  6. Team Building: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, coach staff, and manage disciplinary actions.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency of processes.
  9. Safety Meetings and Documentation: Conduct safety meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  10. Scheduling: Plan work shifts using tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Additional duties as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation team, drivers, warehouse, sales, and other departments. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road, in trucks, and in an office. Exposure to noise and vibration levels in trucks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of experience managing a team.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education and Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation

Range from $55,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
