The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, ensure top-tier service to customers, and oversee safe and profitable operations. Using their transportation expertise, they will manage personnel and optimize daily outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of active-duty service. This is an unpaid, non-benefit-eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free environments for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, training, and a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation staff through coaching, training, and performance discussions. Ensure compliance with safety and legal standards.
  3. Encourage open communication and motivate team members to meet department goals.
  4. Supervise work and productivity within the department, fostering engagement and embodying US Foods values.
  5. Participate in hiring, review performance, and address disciplinary matters.
  6. Maintain accuracy in delivery goals, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  7. Identify waste, improve processes, and enhance safety and efficiency.
  8. Conduct safety and driver meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  9. Plan work schedules using tools like Microsoft Excel.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervision: Direct union and/or non-union drivers.

Internal Relationships: Collaborate with transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse, and other departments.

External Relationships: Interact with customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road and in trucks, exposed to noise and vibration; time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation, delivery, or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education and Physical Requirements

High school diploma or GED required; college preferred. Ability to perform physical activities related to driving and handling equipment.

Compensation

Based on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors. Expected range: $55,000 - $90,000.
