Job summary

Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to operate, inspect and provide preventative and reparative maintenance to wells, high-and-low-pressure pumps, motors, filter beds, tanks, chlorinators and simple laboratory equipment. In addition, this position will perform daily testing of water level readings, water softeners, and iron filter, prepare weekly samples of chemicals, minerals and bacteria, prepare daily records on potable water and salt usage, serve as back-up to the Sewage Plant Operator, and remain up to date and in compliance with rules, directives, policies, procedures and regulations. Essential Functions
  • Operates, inspects, and provides preventive and reparative maintenance to wells, high- and low-pressure pumps, motors, filter beds, tanks, chlorinators, and simple laboratory equipment.
  • Performs daily testing of water level readings, water softeners, and iron filter.
  • Prepares weekly samples of, including but not limited to, chemicals, minerals, and bacteria using the raw, filtered, and finished water for analysis by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois State Water Survey, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).
  • Prepares daily records on potable water and salt usage.
  • Serves as back-up to the Sewage Plant Operator.
  • Remains up to date and in compliance with Departmental Rules, Administrative and Institutional Directives, Institutional Policies and Procedures, and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental developmental equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires three (3) years of experience in water treatment plant operation.
  • Requires possession of a current E.P.A. Class “B” Water Supply Operator Certificate.
  • Requires possession of Illinois EPA Class 3 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with specific capacity and well depth level testing.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with EPA Rules/Regulations of the Safe Water Drinking Act, Source water protection, and Consumer Confidence Reporting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year experience preparing reports.
  • Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires continued active possession of Illinois EPA Class 3 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License.
  • Requires continued active possession of a E.P.A. Class “B” Water Supply Operator Certificate.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
