Job summary

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting, finance, FP&A, or controllership experience with hands-on ownership of month-end close.
  • Strong manufacturing accounting experience including cost accounting, inventory accounting, standard costing, and manufacturing variance analysis.
  • Experience budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting within an operating environment.
  • Ability to translate financial information into practical recommendations for sales and operations leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly accounting close for the assigned operation, ensuring financial results are complete, accurate, and delivered on schedule.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, intercompany accounting, and other core controllership processes.
  • Prepare financial reporting and provide management with clear analysis of performance, trends, variances, and emerging issues.
  • Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting activities in partnership with operations, sales, and other functional leaders.
  • Analyze actual results against budgets, forecasts, and historical performance to identify the business drivers behind variances.
  • Provide financial guidance to operational and commercial leaders, helping evaluate decisions related to costs, margins, profitability, and business performance.

Job description

Our client, an established manufacturing organization in the Grand Rapids area, is seeking an experienced Division Controller to take ownership of accounting and financial planning for a key operating group. This is a highly hands-on position that combines controllership responsibilities with forward-looking financial analysis and close partnership with operational and commercial leaders.

The Division Controller will be responsible for the integrity of the financial results while also helping leadership understand the business drivers behind those results. Core areas of ownership include month-end close, management reporting, budgeting and forecasting, manufacturing and inventory accounting, profitability analysis, working capital, and financial controls.

This opportunity is particularly well suited to a manufacturing finance professional who enjoys operating beyond the accounting function. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between detailed accounting work and broader business analysis, providing leaders with the financial perspective needed to make informed operational and commercial decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the monthly accounting close for the assigned operation, ensuring financial results are complete, accurate, and delivered on schedule.

  • Maintain strong oversight of manufacturing accounting, including inventory, standard costing, reserves, and material, labor, and overhead variances.
  • Work closely with operations to understand production performance, investigate cost variances, and identify opportunities to improve financial results.
  • Develop meaningful profitability analysis across products, customers, and channels to support commercial and operational decision-making.
  • Monitor working capital performance, with particular attention to inventory, receivables, payables, and cash flow.
  • Support standard-cost updates and ensure costing methodologies and related financial information remain accurate.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and ensure accounting practices align with U.S. GAAP and established company policies.
  • Improve financial reporting, forecasting, analytical tools, and processes to provide leadership with better visibility into business performance.
  • Develop and utilize financial and operational KPIs that help management identify trends and take action.
  • Partner with corporate finance and accounting leadership on reporting, planning, analysis, and other financial initiatives.
  • Provide financial analysis for special projects and business decisions as needed.
  • Travel periodic to another company location.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting, finance, FP&A, or controllership experience, with significant hands-on ownership of month-end close and financial reporting.
  • Strong manufacturing accounting experience, including cost accounting, inventory accounting, standard costing, and manufacturing variance analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience leading budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting within an operating environment.
  • Proven ability to work directly with sales and operations leaders, understand business drivers, and translate financial information into practical recommendations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with strong U.S. GAAP knowledge and proficiency with Excel, ERP systems, and financial planning/reporting tools.
