Boise Cascade has an exciting opening for a Division Safety Manager. Please review the responsibilities and needed qualifications below. The Division Safety Manager is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and administration of safety programs to enhance the region’s safety culture and performance. This role focuses on training and supporting managers and supervisors to foster continuous improvement in safety practices and compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.

**The position is based in Boise, Idaho, with a regular on-site presence required at the Boise HQ office**

Job Scope:

The Safety Manager will lead safety strategy and performance improvement across Boise Cascade’s multi-region Building Materials Distribution organization. The position will be responsible for developing and implementing an organization-wide safety strategy designed to reduce injuries, prevent serious incidents, strengthen safety culture, and improve operational risk management across branches, warehouses, yards, fleet operations, and other distribution environments.

The Safety Manager will assess safety performance, identify systemic drivers of incidents and risk, and develop measurable improvement plans that produce sustainable results. The role will focus on moving the organization from reactive incident response toward proactive hazard identification, prevention, and continuous improvement. This includes establishing meaningful leading and lagging indicators, developing safety dashboards and performance reports, analyzing trends across locations and regions, and using data to prioritize resources and corrective actions.

The position will provide safety leadership for risks associated with powered industrial trucks, material handling, loading and unloading, yard operations, commercial vehicles, industrial equipment, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, fall protection, ergonomics, contractor activities, and other operational hazards. The Safety Manager will also lead or oversee incident investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective-action planning, regulatory compliance, safety audits, training, and follow-up activities.

A significant part of the role will involve building leadership ownership and accountability for safety. The Safety Manager will partner with executive leadership, regional leaders, branch managers, supervisors, safety professionals, and frontline employees to ensure safety is integrated into daily operating decisions. The position will coach leaders, strengthen supervisor capabilities, encourage employee involvement in hazard identification, and promote an environment where employees feel comfortable reporting safety concerns and near misses.

The Safety Manager must be able to influence across a decentralized organization where success depends on credibility, collaboration, communication, and practical problem-solving. The successful candidate will be comfortable presenting safety strategy and performance to senior leaders, coaching operational managers, reviewing warehouse and distribution processes, investigating incidents, and engaging directly with employees in the field.

The ideal candidate will have a documented history of improving safety performance across multiple locations or regions in an industrial, distribution, manufacturing, building-materials, transportation, or similar environment. Experience should include reducing recordable injuries, lost-time incidents, serious incidents, or other meaningful safety indicators; implementing enterprise-wide safety strategies; developing safety professionals and operational leaders; and sustaining improvements over time.

Responsibilities

Lead the company-wide safety strategyacross multiple BMD locations, regions, warehouses, yards, fleet operations, and other operational environments.

Assess safety performance and systemic riskby analyzing incidents, near misses, injuries, operational practices, audit findings, and trends across locations and job functions.

Develop and execute measurable safety improvement plansthat reduce recordable injuries, lost-time incidents, serious incidents, high-potential events, and other significant safety risks.

Establish operational accountability for safetyby partnering with executives, regional leaders, branch managers, supervisors, and frontline leaders to ensure safety is integrated into daily business decisions.

Lead serious incident, injury, near‑miss, and high‑potential event investigations, using root‑cause analysis to identify systemic contributors and implement effective corrective actions.

Build a proactive safety culturethat encourages hazard identification, employee participation, near‑miss reporting, stop‑work authority, and early intervention before incidents occur.

Develop and maintain meaningful safety scorecards and dashboardsusing both leading and lagging indicators to evaluate performance, prioritize resources, and measure sustained improvement.

Provide safety expertise for high-risk operations, including powered industrial trucks, material handling, loading and unloading, yard operations, commercial vehicles, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, fall protection, ergonomics, and contractor activities.

Strengthen safety leadership capabilityby coaching managers and supervisors, developing safety professionals, establishing clear roles and expectations, and building organizational competency beyond the Safety function.

Ensure regulatory and company safety requirements are implemented effectively, including OSHA compliance, written safety programs, training, inspections, corrective actions, recordkeeping, and continuous improvement activities.

Basic Qualifications

College Degree or equivalent work experience in related job function, plus a minimum of five (5) years experience in progressively responsible safety positions in a manufacturing environment. Must be able to develop effective relationships with appropriate audiences, i.e. government and legal agencies, all levels of region employees, and medical community. Individual must be focused on building positive strategic working relationships with a high level of drive, motivation and ability to respond to internal and external customer needs with a sense of immediacy. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem analysis skills and the ability to manage resources, and lead and motivate people.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, or American Society of Safety Engineers preferred.
