Electrical Engineer II - Distribution Engineering (Overhead Power Lines)

Position Overview

Kiewit Power Delivery Engineering is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer II to join our growing Distribution Engineering team. In this role, you will support the design and execution of overhead electric distribution projects for utility clients throughout North America. Working alongside experienced engineers and designers, you will contribute to detailed engineering design, EPC project execution, construction support, and client service efforts while helping deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective power infrastructure solutions.


Responsibilities


  • Design overhead distribution power lines and related facilities in accordance with utility, client, company, and industry standards.

  • Perform engineering calculations including conductor sizing, pole loading analysis, guying requirements, voltage drop studies, and NESC clearance compliance.

  • Prepare construction packages including plan and profile drawings, staking sheets, structure assemblies, bill of materials, and material specifications.

  • Support route selection, field investigations, site visits, and constructability reviews.

  • Coordinate project activities with project managers, engineers, designers, construction teams, and client representatives.

  • Review engineering drawings and technical documents to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with project requirements.

  • Assist with project schedules, cost estimates, and deliverable tracking.

  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and project closeout activities.

  • Participate in client meetings, technical reviews, and interdisciplinary design coordination efforts.

  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement in all aspects of project execution.

Responsibilities


  • Performs intermediate calculations under the supervision of a more senior engineer. Solves problems using well established scientific principles.

  • Has good understanding of the NEC and how to apply it to design on electrical systems.

  • Develops electrical data sheets for electrical equipment.

  • Develops low voltage and medium voltage wiring schematics with supervision.

  • Able to analyze data and understands the relationships and correlations.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering minimum required.

  • 2-4 years' minimum relevant experience in refining and petrochemical industry.

  • Receives limited instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer.

  • Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well.

  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Present ideas clearly and in professional manner.

  • Participates on teams effectively. Accepts direction from the team. Individually contributes to success of the team.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.

  • 2+ years of experience in electric utility, power delivery, distribution, transmission, or related engineering fields.

  • Knowledge of overhead distribution line design and utility construction practices.

  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), IEEE, ANSI, and utility design standards.

  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, or utility design software preferred.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary project team.

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain.

  • Willingness to travel periodically for field assignments, project meetings, and site visits.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience designing overhead electric distribution systems.

  • Utility consulting or EPC project experience.

  • Familiarity with pole loading analysis software and distribution design tools.

  • Experience supporting construction and field engineering activities.

  • Knowledge of distribution system modernization, reliability improvements, and storm-hardening initiatives.
