Job Summary/Basic Function

Discussion Facilitators help create respectful and productive group conversations. Facilitators receive training and ongoing support to develop their skills through practice and experience. Different events may require different facilitation approaches, and training, supervision, and resources will be provided accordingly.

Facilitators may lead discussions in person or online and are engaged on an irregular, event-by-event basis. Compensation is determined by the length of each event and the staffing requirements.

Job Duties
Description of Job Duties
Pre-event Preparation
  • Attend provided training.
  • Review pre-conversation materials before each discussion.
Facilitate group
  • Assist with setting up and cleaning up group discussion space.
  • Greet and orient participants.
  • Assist group with setting conversation ground-rules and defined goals.
  • Encourage participation from all group members.
  • Maintain a neutral role when appropriate, focusing on supporting the conversation rather than sharing personal opinions.
  • Use facilitation techniques such as asking open-ended questions, encouraging turn-taking, and managing group dynamics.
  • Keep discussions focused, productive, and moving toward their objectives.
Document Discussion Outcomes
  • Record key ideas, themes, and outcomes when required.
  • Capture notes using tools such as whiteboards, flip charts, shared documents, or on-screen note-taking platforms.
  • Provide accurate documentation of discussion results for goal-oriented events.
Maintain Professionalism and Confidentiality
  • Treat all participants respectfully during and after events.
  • Refrain from gossip or discussions that could compromise participants’ trust.
  • Maintain confidentiality of discussions and participant information when required.
  • Represent the organization professionally in all interactions.
