Job summary

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York seeks a Disability Advocacy Program Staff Attorney in Albany to represent clients with intellectual, mental, and physical disabilities across sixteen counties. The role involves handling Social Security Disability and SSI claims, plus other public benefits matters, with a commitment to client-centered advocacy.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed to practice law in NYS or be eligible for admission; bar exam considered.
• Effective communication with clients and staff; ability to work independently and solve problems.
• Preference for training in community lawyering or organizing and strong listening skills.
• Willingness to travel across the service area.
• New York State resident with reliable transportation.
• Strong computer, administrative, reporting, and data-entry skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal assistance to clients with intellectual, mental, or physical limitations.
• Represent Social Security Disability and SSI claims and related benefits matters.
• Deliver a full range of legal services: counsel, referrals, hearings, litigation, systemic advocacy, education, outreach, and community lawyering.
• Participate in training and advocacy initiatives to keep skills current.
• Build trusting relationships with clients within a compassionate, integrity-driven culture.
• Collaborate with LASNNY attorneys and paralegals to maximize access to services.
