Responsible for providing superior service to both internal and external customers by establishing and achieving strategic service goals through one or more departments or teams of employees. Determine case load of underwriters and assign work appropriately so as to meet or exceed service delivery and ensure underwriting practices are followed. Will underwrite cases in addition to supervising the completion and accuracy of cases underwritten by department underwriters. Responsible for departmental budgeting.
Responsibilities
- Develop and ensure department underwriting procedures, practices, guidelines, forms and manuals are used for all cases underwritten by department for a wide variety of products and distribution systems
- Review all new business, underwriting mail and referrals within quality and productivity standards. Continually search for ways to improve effectiveness, efficiency to all processes.
- Set department goals, objectives and priorities in alignment with company/divisional goals.
- Assist in the budget process by providing information on needs within the team.
- In the VP’s absence resolve escalated issues that would normally be handled by the VP as they arise.
- Set team goals, objectives, and priorities in alignment with the department goals.
- Facilitate resolution of any problem that arises with an internal or external customer.
- Works well with other managers on integrated strategies, workflows and system development efforts that maximize organizational effectiveness. Completes performance appraisals and evaluates overall performance of team.
- Participates in interviewing and selection of new employees.
- Skilled in managing the culture and climate of the department through effective communication, standards setting and leading by example.
- Oversee the management staff providing hiring, direction, counseling and training to staff.
- Recommend projects, processes or changes in underwriting policies and procedures to promote efficiency within the department.
- Continually looks for ways to accountable for maintaining positive, proactive relationships with both internal and external customers.
- Assure an underwriting audit program is in place and completed to expectations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- FLMI or CLU or similar professional designations.
- Minimum of 7 years management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of insurance processes and products.
- Prior experience with mid to large case underwriting cases.
- Strong demonstrated leadership skills.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written including presentation skills.
- Must be able to deal directly and effectively with senior management level both internally and externally.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Excellent decision making skills.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
Working Conditions
The Salary for this position generally ranges between $143,000-$190,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus of 20% based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion.
