Job description

About the team

We are looking for an exceptional Director of Tax to join Turo's Finance organization. This is a high-impact, highly visible leadership role that will own the full global tax function—initially focusing on rebuilding and elevating our indirect tax practice, then expanding over time to encompass all aspects of tax strategy, compliance, and planning. This person will be a critical partner to the SVP of Finance (Head of Tax) and will serve as a senior technical resource and people leader within the function. The ideal candidate is a seasoned tax professional who has operated in fast-paced, high-growth marketplace or platform environments, brings deep expertise in both indirect and direct tax, and has the leadership presence and intellectual horsepower to lead the Tax function. This role reports to the SVP of Finance (Head of Tax) and will work closely with Finance, Legal, Accounting, FP&A, and Product.

What you will do
Indirect Tax
  • Lead the rebuild and continued development of Turo's global indirect tax function, including U.S. sales and use tax across all jurisdictions, airports, and international VAT/GST programs
  • Own the end-to-end marketplace facilitator tax compliance strategy, including nexus analysis, registration, collection, remittance, and audit defense across all 50 states and internationally
  • Monitor and interpret evolving marketplace facilitator laws, digital services taxes, state-by-state legislative changes, and airport agreements; assess their impact on Turo's platform and host/guest transactions
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to ensure tax logic is correctly implemented in Turo's platform, pricing, and invoicing systems
  • Oversee indirect tax controversies, audits, and inquiries from tax authorities and airports, and support the existing team on the development and execution of audit defense strategies
  • Oversee the ASC 450 contingent liability reserves related to indirect tax exposures; ensure reserves are properly documented and defensible
Federal & International Tax Compliance
  • Oversee the preparation and timely filing of U.S. federal and state income tax returns, including all international information reporting
  • Manage Turo's quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision process, including deferred taxes, valuation allowances, and uncertain tax positions (FIN 48/ASC 740-10)
  • Ensure SOX-compliant internal controls over all tax reporting processes and interface effectively with external auditors
  • Oversee transfer pricing documentation and intercompany policies for cross-border transactions; partner with outside advisors on required documentation
  • Monitor OECD/BEPS 2.0 and Pillar Two developments; assess impact on Turo's global structure and effective tax rate
Tax Strategy & Planning
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive global tax strategy aligned with Turo's business objectives and growth plans
  • Advise leadership on the tax implications of corporate structure decisions, new market entry, product launches, and international expansion
  • Identify and implement strategic tax planning opportunities to optimize Turo's effective tax rate
  • Support M&A due diligence and post-acquisition integration efforts from a tax perspective
Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the tax team; build a high-performance culture with a focus on career development and technical growth
  • Serve as internal expert and advisor on all tax matters; translate complex tax issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-tax stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Product teams to align tax strategy with business priorities
  • Manage relationships with external advisors, law firms, and tax technology vendors
Your profile
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, with a combination of Big 4 or top national firm public accounting and in-house corporate tax at a high-growth technology or marketplace company
  • Deep expertise in U.S. sales and use tax, including marketplace facilitator rules, nexus analysis, audit management, and multi-state compliance at scale
  • Strong technical knowledge of international indirect tax, including VAT/GST in key jurisdictions (EU, Canada, UK, Australia)
  • Hands-on experience managing ASC 450 contingent tax reserves and documenting indirect tax exposures
  • Proven track record managing the ASC 740 income tax provision process, including deferred taxes, valuation allowances, and uncertain tax positions
  • Solid experience with U.S. federal income tax compliance
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing tax teams, with a track record of building high-performing functions
  • Experience managing tax controversy and audits across multiple jurisdictions
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master's in Taxation or JD/LLM strongly preferred
