Area Sales Manager, Public Sector-SLED

Location: Remote, US

An overview of this role

The Area Sales Manager (ASM) is vital in all of our territory selling markets. As the ASM for our Public Sector, SLED vertical, you will lead a 5-8 person sales team, supporting existing and new clients and helping GitLab surpass growth goals. Reporting to the AVP of Public Sector, you will be responsible for hiring, developing, and leading a high-performing team of Strategic Account sales personnel to meet and exceed sales targets.

GitLab's platform increases developer productivity, improves operational efficiency, reduces security and compliance risks, and accelerates digital transformation. Over 40 million users and more than 50% of Fortune 100 and Public Sector organizations trust GitLab to deliver secure, faster software.

This role is within our Public Sector-SLED team. The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of management experience and a successful track record in Public Sector Sales Management, selling to Public Sector clients. Experience managing teams, selling similar software and SaaS solutions, and a passion for open source software are essential.

What you’ll do

  • Manage software sales, bookings, and revenue of a sales team
  • Analyze market dynamics to maximize success and identify new growth opportunities
  • Prepare forecasts, manage territory/industry, and develop growth plans
  • Educate the team on industry factors including competitors, regulations, trends, customer needs, and pricing
  • Establish and report on performance metrics; address deficiencies
  • Align sales plans with corporate revenue goals
  • Recruit and hire top talent
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of potential future hires
  • Manage a team of 5-8 Strategic Account Leaders and foster a positive team environment

What you’ll bring

  • Progressive experience in field sales, operations, and leadership in open source or DevOps software environments
  • Experience selling to the Federal SLED market; willingness to sell actively
  • Proven success in meeting or exceeding performance targets
  • Experience with CRM and marketing automation tools (e.g., Salesforce, Clari, Marketo)
  • Effective judgment, sensitivity, creativity, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and presentation skills; executive communication and mentoring abilities
  • Alignment with GitLab’s values
  • Ability to use GitLab effectively
  • Willingness to travel as needed and comply with the travel policy

Remote-Global

The salary range for this role varies by location and is determined through the interview process, considering education, experience, skills, and market data. For residents of listed locations, the range is $117,300 — $207,000 USD. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay up to 100% of base salary.
