Job summary

CyrusOne seeks a Director, Power Generation to lead the development and execution of the company's power generation program, focusing on baseload and bridging solutions to accelerate data center deployments.

You will drive strategy, lead commercial contracts for power purchases and energy-as-a-service, manage cross-functional projects across facilities, engineering, procurement and environmental teams, and push toward cleaner fuels while maximizing revenue opportunities.

Job description

This Director, Power Generation will have primary responsibility for leading the development of CyrusOne’s power generation program. The power generation program is focused on both baseload generation and bridging generation solutions. This position’s key objective is to accelerate CyrusOne’s speed to market for its data center campuses.

Power Generation Program Leadership:

Develop and lead CyrusOne’s power generation strategy. Lead generation technology selection for generation strategy and, in coordination with internal team and external vendors, ensure generation solutions meet the needs of customers and the company. With respect to power generation solutions, lead commercial contract negotiations on power purchase agreements and energy as a service arrangements. Develop strategy for baseload power generation post baseload operational period.

Lead project management of power generation projects interacting with CyrusOne Location and Power Strategy, Construction, Engineering, Procurement, and Environmental teams. Develop and provide baseload power generation solutions utilizing readily available fuels including natural gas. Develop and maximize revenue optimization strategies for local, nearby and onsite power generation via demand response, ancillary services and energy arbitrage market opportunities. Develop and lead strategy to transition power generation to cleaner fuels.

Fuel Supply Management and Infrastructure Development:

Lead discussions with local distribution utilities and interstate pipelines to secure and contract fuel supply infrastructure for fueling power generation solutions. Work with 3rd party energy market advisors to contract and hedge fuel supply risk exposure per CyrusOne energy price risk management program. Maintain fuel supply agreements and fuel transport arrangements. Support contract review and negotiations for fuel supply infrastructure and fuel supply.

Site Selection:

Support fuel supply inquiries for all data center development projects. Support location site analysis with respect to fuel infrastructure availability and power generation viability. Analyze fuel supply situation at prospective sites (utility, tariffs, capacity, geography, etc.). Analyze power generation viability with respect to site / land locations. Analyze the short and long-term fuel supply capacity potential for selected sites including natural gas.

Cross-Functional Support:

Support communication of energy and sustainability efforts across multiple areas of the organization (Sales, Construction, Operations, customer support). Research and respond to general power and generation questions for clients. Assist with tracking capital budget commitments.

Qualifications:

8+ years experience with power generation and/or energy (natural gas and power) supply management. Experience with complex commercial energy contract negotiations. Experience negotiating natural gas utility/pipeline extension and connection agreements. Financial or energy engineering experience. Experience managing multiple projects and collaborating with internal staff, utility providers, consultants, and external stakeholders. Experience with communication including communicating commercial, regulatory, market, technical and contractual details to all organizational levels. Strong understanding of the transmission and distribution grid and the ability to analyze its supply is a plus.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a business or technical discipline
