Job summary

USO seeks a Director of Planned Giving in Arlington, VA to lead the development and implementation of a sophisticated planned giving program and the 1941 Legacy Society. You will strategize donor engagement, coordinate cross‑functional teams, and oversee marketing and legal processes surrounding bequests and major gifts.

You will manage a portfolio of donors, train staff, and ensure compliance while driving growth in planned giving revenue.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years’ work experience in a fundraising or development role. 3+ years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience in planned giving, major gift and/or principal gift fundraising with demonstrated success in securing personal solicitations of $100,000 or more.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours and manage a team in a dynamic, nonprofit environment.

Responsibilities

  • Refine, develop and implement a comprehensive planned giving program for the USO with strategic guidance and material support to national and regional staff.
  • Strategically manage a portfolio of approximately 50 planned giving prospects through discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Serve as a strategic partner for Relationship Managers on donor relationships where planned giving is central to securing commitments.
  • Oversee the 1941 Legacy Society through donor stewardship, visits, reports and invitations to events.
  • Coordinate planned giving marketing, communications and mail appeals in collaboration with Marketing, Legal, Operations and Major Gifts teams.
  • Use donor databases to track prospects and donors, secure testimonials, and coordinate with Development Operations on bequests.
  • Review legal documents to administer planned gift expectancies and generate reports and SOPs, working with attorneys and financial advisors.
  • Maintain knowledge of tax changes affecting legacy donors and attend relevant webinars and conferences.
  • Supervise the Planned Giving tasks handled by the Development Coordinator and ensure timely responses to inquiries.
