Job description

Our Client is a leading energy company focused on developing, owning, operating, and optimizing battery energy storage systems (“BESS”) to reduce grid volatility and increase system resiliency. They currently operate 350 MW / 700 MWh in ERCOT and have projects under development throughout the United States.

We are seeking a commercially driven Director, Origination & Structuring to lead the Company’s commercial origination, structuring of the origination, and key partnership efforts for utility-scale battery energy storage assets. This leader will identify, develop, structure, negotiate, and advance strategic commercial opportunities with utilities, data center developers and owners, hyperscalers, large-load customers, energy marketers, trading firms, load-serving entities, and other strategic counterparties.

This role will own the front-end commercial lifecycle from market mapping and prospecting through negotiations, commercial execution, and handoff to internal teams. The successful candidate will combine deep BESS and power market knowledge with strong transaction execution capabilities, established industry relationships, and the ability to translate market opportunities into financeable, risk-adjusted commercial structures.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute our client's origination strategy across priority U.S. power markets, with an emphasis on BESS commercialization, structured offtake, and long-term revenue opportunities.

  • Source, qualify, and advance new business opportunities with utilities, data center developers and owners, hyperscale and colocation customers, corporate energy buyers, load-serving entities, energy marketers, trading firms, banks, IPPs, developers, and other strategic counterparties.

  • Originate and structure commercial arrangements for BESS assets, including tolling agreements, capacity contracts, resource adequacy products, energy storage service agreements, hedges, revenue-sharing structures, PPAs / VPPAs where applicable, and other customized offtake or market-access structures.

  • Lead relationship development, customer engagement, proposal strategy, pricing and term-sheet discussions, commercial negotiations, and internal alignment from initial prospecting through execution and handoff.

  • Build and maintain a disciplined origination pipeline, including target accounts, relationship maps, opportunity stages, transaction milestones, key risks, expected commercial value, and execution timelines.

  • Partner with Development, Optimization, Finance, Legal, and executive leadership to evaluate origination opportunities, support project siting and portfolio strategy, and assess transaction economics and risk allocation.

  • Coordinate commercial input for internal approval processes, including committee materials, transaction summaries, risk assessments, counterparty diligence, project finance considerations, and handoff documentation.

  • Monitor market developments impacting BESS commercialization, including large-load growth, data center power demand, interconnection constraints, utility procurement, merchant storage economics, capacity markets, ancillary services, congestion, basis risk, and evolving ISO / RTO market rules.

  • Represent our client externally with executive presence and credibility at customer meetings, industry events, conferences, and strategic partnership discussions.

  • Serve as a commercial thought partner to leadership by providing market intelligence, counterparty feedback, transaction strategy, and recommendations that support our client's long-term growth priorities.

Who You Are
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field; equivalent experience and demonstrated capability will be considered.

  • 10+ years of experience in energy origination, power marketing, commercial structuring, infrastructure development, utilities, renewable energy, battery storage, trading, or a comparable commercial function.

  • Demonstrated track record of originating, structuring, negotiating, and advancing complex commercial transactions in the power, renewable energy, infrastructure, or battery storage sectors.

  • Direct experience with structured energy products such as BESS tolling agreements, capacity agreements, resource adequacy products, energy hedges, PPAs / VPPAs, energy management agreements, market-access agreements, or comparable offtake structures.

  • Deep understanding of U.S. power markets, BESS revenue models, storage economics, ISO / RTO market design, congestion and basis risk, capacity markets, ancillary services, utility procurement, and commercial risk allocation.

  • Established network across utilities, data center developers and owners, hyperscalers, corporate energy buyers, power traders, energy marketers, banks, IPPs, developers, and other relevant market participants.

  • Strong commercial judgment, executive presence, and ability to build trust with sophisticated counterparties from initial outreach through transaction execution.

  • Ability to translate market opportunities into actionable origination strategy, while balancing relationship development, transaction economics, internal priorities, project finance ability, and execution risk.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and cross-functional leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across Development, Finance, Legal, Optimization, Operations, and senior leadership.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the discipline to manage pipeline visibility, deal process, handoff documentation, and internal approvals in a fast-moving growth environment.

  • Knowledge of interconnection, transmission, resource adequacy, utility-scale project development, merchant storage optimization, and portfolio risk management.

  • MBA, advanced degree, or additional energy markets training is a plus.
