Job summary

The Poynter Institute seeks an executive to lead its technology team and ensure superb user experiences for our journalistic audience. This role blends hands-on coding with strategic oversight across WordPress, WooCommerce, and our learning platform.

Reporting to the COO, the Director of Technology will shape the technology roadmap, manage a small staff, vendors, and budgets, and partner with leaders to turn technology into better products and stronger revenue.

Qualifications

• Significant experience (5+ years) leading technology and digital strategy.
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.
• Engineering background with ability to read and review code.
• Strong product and user-experience instincts.

Responsibilities

• Set technology vision and roadmap aligned with institutional goals.
• Build trust and buy-in across technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Partner on new ventures and help teams level up technologically.
• Provide coherence across the organization on technical decisions.
• Oversee security, uptime, and core tech stack (WordPress, WooCommerce, LMS).
