Job Summary

The Director of Technology provides strong thought leadershipand strategic, hands-on direction for CyManII's infrastructure,cybersecurity, cloud services, endpoints, IT projects, and emergingtechnologies. The Director anticipates evolving technology needs,shapes organizational strategy, and translates complex technical,security, and partner requirements into effective, forward-lookingsolutions. The Director of Technology champions flexible,collaborative, and iterative work practices through secure,reliable, and adaptable technology services. As CyManII's principaltechnology advisor and practitioner, the Director establishes aclear technical vision supporting CyManII initiatives while leadingarchitecture, implementation, systems and cloud administration,endpoint management, troubleshooting, security operations, andincident response. The Director provides strategic and technicalleadership to staff, vendors, and research teams and helps shapethe technical direction of initiatives involving the U.S.Department of Energy, national laboratories, academic institutions,manufacturers, industry partners, and other state and federalagencies. Success requires substantial hands-on technical expertiseacross a broad range of IT disciplines, combined with the abilityto influence stakeholders, challenge conventional approaches,identify emerging opportunities and risks, and build confidence inCyManII's technical capabilities and innovations.

Core Responsibilities

1. Develops and executes technology strategies, policies,standards, roadmaps, budgets, and priorities that support CyManIIobjectives, including evaluating and deploying new technologies;balance strategic leadership with hands-on technical execution,end-user support, and operations; reports weekly to Leadership onstatus, plans, and complex issues.
2. Architects, implements, administers, secures, and troubleshootscomputer networks, servers, endpoints, identity platforms, cloudservices, and collaboration systems while maintaining directhands-on involvement in network engineering, systemsadministration, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, endpointmanagement, and end-user support.
3. Administers and troubleshoots Linux and Windows environments(configuration, virtualization, IAM, patching,automation, monitoring, backup/recovery) and designs, configures,secures, and supports enterprise networks (routing, switching,segmentation, VPNs, wireless systems; Cisco and multi-vendorfirewalls).
4. Manages SaaS/PaaS/IaaS solutions with emphasis on MicrosoftAzure and Microsoft identity, endpoint, security, productivity, andcollaboration tools; evaluates cloud, software, AI, endpoint, andthird-party services for security, privacy, data-governance,compliance, contractual, and supply-chain risks; maintainscurrentknowledge of emerging AI developments for secure, responsibleadoption.
5. Manages endpoints through full lifecycle (provisioning,software deployment, security, inventory, maintenance, replacement,disposal, end-user support) and supports onboarding/offboarding(device preparation, account provisioning, access management,equipment recovery, data protection).
6. Ensures system availability, performance, resilience,recoverability, and security via monitoring, configurationmanagement, backups, disaster recovery, and lifecycle planning;assess architectures, diagnoses complex issues, and performsimplementation, troubleshooting, remediation, and incidentresponse.
7. Leads cybersecurity accountability (operational riskmanagement, compliance, practices, stakeholder coordination) andmanages IT/physical security technologies (architecture, riskassessments, monitoring, vulnerability management, incidentresponse, electronic access controls, security cameras, audits,reports)
8. Aligns security practices TXRamp and Texas DIR securitystandards; performs risk assessments, conducts internal audits ofsystems and controls, documents and remediates findings, and leadsincident response from investigation through recovery andpost-incident review.
9. Supports software development, containerized workloads, securedata exchange, and process automation using Python, PowerShell,Bash, or comparable tools; support DevSecOps practices includingCI/CD, container security, automated testing, or infrastructure ascode; support Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) practicesincluding inference, model management, and fine-tuning.
10. Plans and manages IT projects (scope, schedules, budgets,resources, risks, changes, dependencies, implementation, transitionto operations) and provides technical direction coordinating staff,stakeholders, vendors, consultants, teams, and partners.
11. Manages technology contracts, procurement, licensing, vendorperformance, asset records, and capacity planning.
12. Collaborates closely with UT San Antonio's UniversityTechnology Solutions and the Office of Information Security toensure an effective, compliant IT infrastructure; representsCyManII in technical working groups, partner initiatives,architecture discussions, security reviews, and complianceactivities.
13. Communicates complex technical and cybersecurity issues clearlythrough verbal communication, documentation, presentations,customer service, and stakeholder engagement with technical andnontechnical audiences.
14. Frequent travel by personal vehicle between campus locations,with occasional travel to conferences, meetings, partner sites, andother work-related events.
15. Provides technical leadership by representing the Institute atrelevant cybersecurity and technology conferences, leading trainingevents and participates in technical panels and industrydiscussions as appropriate.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
• Seven (7) years of related work experience.
• This position may require the ability to maintain the securityand integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per TexasEO-GA-48.

PreferredQualifications

• Master's degree in arelated field.Ten (10) years ofprogressive technology experience, including at least five (5)years of leadership responsibility.Possession of an activeU.S. TS/SCI security clearance.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

• Primarily sedentary role with occasional standing or walking;may occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

This position will work primarily on campus, includingSan Pedro 1, North Paseo, and Port of San Antoniolocations. Travel and parking expenses are the employee'sresponsibility.
