Job summary

University of Wisconsin–Madison is seeking a Senior Director of Scientific Computing and Research Infrastructure to lead the SMPH computing ecosystem. You will oversee HPC clusters, cloud platforms, data storage, software environments, and cyberinfrastructure, aligning strategy with biomedical and population health research priorities.

The role requires a PhD or terminal degree preference and at least 10 years in scientific computing, with 5+ years in leadership.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in scientific computing or enterprise research infrastructure
• 5+ years of leadership and personnel management
• Experience with cloud platforms and hybrid infrastructure for research
• Proven success in enterprise-scale computing and storage
• Experience in cloud computing initiatives and governance

Responsibilities

• Develop multi-year strategy for scientific computing, cloud services, and data infrastructure
• Advise leadership on emerging technologies including ML/AI for research
• Direct architecture, operation, and lifecycle of HPC infrastructure
• Lead research cloud strategy and hybrid architectures with governance and cost controls
• Oversee research data lifecycle management, storage, backup, and disaster recovery
• Establish governance for cyberinfrastructure investments across units
• Ensure security, privacy, and compliance with HIPAA, NIH, FDA, NIST, and FISMA
• Build partnerships with investigators and core facilities to enable complex research
• Ensure high-quality, responsive research computing services and user support
• Recruit and develop a high-performing scientific computing team
