Job summary

Actalent is seeking a strategic Director of Environmental Health, Safety & Workers’ Compensation to lead enterprise safety, regulatory compliance, and claims management across construction and manufacturing operations in Sioux Falls, SD.

You will shape a world-class safety culture, mentor EHS professionals, and partner with executives to drive injury prevention and risk reduction. This senior role requires 10+ years of EHS leadership and strong OSHA knowledge.

Qualifications

We are seeking a strategic and hands‑on Director of Environmental Health, Safety & Workers’ Compensation to lead enterprise‑wide safety, environmental compliance, and workers’ compensation programs across a rapidly growing construction and manufacturing organization.

This is a high‑impact executive leadership role responsible for developing and driving a world‑class safety culture across office, fabrication, manufacturing, and active construction jobsite environments. The ideal candidate is a proven safety leader who can influence executives and field personnel alike, reduce organizational risk, improve safety performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and build scalable programs that support continued growth.

You will serve as the organization's subject matter expert for EHS strategy, OSHA compliance, environmental stewardship, workers' compensation management, and risk mitigation while leading initiatives that protect employees, projects, equipment, and company assets.

What You'll Own

Enterprise Safety Leadership

• Develop and execute the organization's long‑term EHS strategy, policies, standards, and performance objectives.
• Partner with executive leadership to create a proactive, accountability‑driven safety culture.
• Champion continuous improvement initiatives focused on injury prevention, hazard elimination, and operational excellence.
• Establish leading and lagging indicators to monitor safety performance and drive measurable results.
• Build safety ownership throughout all levels of the organization, from executive leadership to field crews.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, local, and industry‑specific regulations.
• Lead company‑wide compliance audits, inspections, and corrective action programs.
• Maintain all OSHA logs, recordkeeping, reporting requirements, and regulatory documentation.
• Assess organizational risks and develop mitigation strategies to reduce exposure and liability.
• Maintain readiness for audits, inspections, client reviews, and regulatory inquiries.

Construction & Field Safety

• Oversee safety programs across active construction projects, fabrication facilities, warehouses, and office locations.
• Conduct regular site visits, executive safety walks, and field audits.
• Stop unsafe work activities when risk exists to employees, property, or operations.
• Partner with Operations, Project Management, Manufacturing, and Field Leadership to ensure safety integration into all phases of work.
• Drive implementation of project‑specific safety plans, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), permit programs, and incident prevention initiatives.

Incident Prevention & Investigation

• Lead investigations involving injuries, near misses, environmental incidents, property damage, and safety violations.
• Utilize root cause analysis methodologies to identify trends and corrective actions.
• Develop preventative measures that reduce future incidents and improve overall safety performance.
• Provide executive reporting and recommendations based on incident data and trend analysis.

Environmental Compliance

• Manage environmental programs involving hazardous materials, waste handling, chemical management, spill prevention, and pollution control.
• Ensure SDS documentation and hazardous material inventories remain current and compliant.
• Maintain records regarding employee exposure, hazardous waste management, and environmental reporting requirements.
• Promote environmentally responsible operational practices across all facilities and projects.

Workers’ Compensation & Claims Management

• Provide executive oversight of all workers' compensation claims and return‑to‑work programs.
• Collaborate with carriers, TPAs, legal counsel, medical providers, and internal stakeholders.
• Drive claim resolution strategies designed to reduce costs, improve outcomes, and support injured employees.
• Review injury reports, reserve estimates, medical treatment plans, disability ratings, and compensation determinations.
• Monitor claim trends and implement programs that reduce frequency and severity.

Training & Workforce Development

• Establish and oversee company‑wide EHS training programs.
• Ensure employees receive regulatory, operational, and site‑specific safety training.
• Improve safety awareness through coaching, communication, and leadership engagement initiatives.
• Develop supervisors and managers as safety leaders throughout the organization.
• Lead new hire safety orientation, compliance education, and continuous learning programs.

Leadership & Team Development

• Build, mentor, and develop high‑performing EHS professionals.
• Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and accountability measures.
• Drive collaboration between safety, operations, HR, project management, and executive leadership.
• Serve as the primary resource and advisor for EHS and workers' compensation matters company‑wide.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience.
• Experience supporting construction, manufacturing, fabrication, industrial, or heavy commercial operations.
• Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, compliance requirements, and best practices.
• Demonstrated success leading multi‑site safety programs.
• Workers’ compensation claims management experience.
• Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses.
• Strong understanding of risk management principles and safety management systems.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, coaching, and organizational skills.
• Ability to travel regularly to project sites and operational facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Safety, Environmental Sciences, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related discipline.
• Professional certifications such as:
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
  • CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician)
  • CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)
  • OSHA Authorized Trainer
  • ISO Lead Auditor
  • Certified Environmental Safety & Health Professional (CESHP)
• Experience with ISNetworld, Avetta, Procore, Safety Management Systems, and incident tracking platforms.
• Experience leading safety programs within construction and fabrication environments.
• Previous responsibility for enterprise‑wide workers’ compensation programs.

Job Type & Location

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $110000.00 - $150000.00/yr.
