Job Description

The Safety Specialist supports a leading construction industry association by advancing workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and workforce development across Iowa. This role serves as a trusted safety resource for member contractors by delivering training, conducting field assessments, providing regulatory guidance, and building strong industry relationships. It is well-suited for a safety professional who enjoys a balanced mix of field work, training, consulting, and relationship management while making a meaningful impact on safety performance throughout the construction industry.

Responsibilities

• Deliver OSHA, CPR, First Aid, and construction-specific safety training programs to member organizations.
• Facilitate classroom, virtual, and field-based safety training sessions for employees and management teams.
• Develop and distribute toolbox talks, safety communications, and educational materials to support ongoing safety awareness initiatives.
• Promote best practices and continuous safety improvement throughout the construction industry.
• Conduct job site visits to evaluate workplace hazards and provide compliance guidance to member contractors.
• Audit, review, and assist in the development of comprehensive safety and health programs for member organizations.
• Support members with OSHA documentation, recordkeeping requirements, and inspection preparedness.
• Interpret OSHA regulations and industry safety standards and communicate their practical application to members.
• Assist contractors in identifying opportunities for ongoing improvement in safety performance and culture.
• Promote participation in industry safety recognition programs and maintain related tracking and reporting.
• Maintain accurate records of training activities, site visits, compliance reviews, and member interactions.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and compliance documentation to support members and internal stakeholders.
• Represent the organization at safety meetings, industry events, roundtables, and community functions.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, regulatory agencies, and construction industry stakeholders.
• Support safety councils, industry committees, and strategic initiatives that enhance workplace safety across Iowa.
• Collaborate with internal leadership to advance organizational goals, expand member engagement, and strengthen safety programs.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience.
• 2–4 years of experience in construction safety, occupational safety, EHS, or a related field.
• Experience conducting safety training, jobsite inspections, or compliance audits.
• Familiarity with OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
• Experience maintaining training records, compliance documentation, and reporting metrics.
• Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout Iowa.
• Ability to accommodate occasional overnight travel.
• Comfort working in both office environments and active construction sites.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational and time management skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• OSHA certification and CPR/First Aid certification preferred; candidates willing to obtain required certifications within six months of hire will be considered.
• Experience delivering instructor-led safety training in classroom, virtual, or field settings.
• Knowledge of construction safety management systems and regulatory compliance programs.
• Strong understanding of hazard recognition, incident prevention, and safety program development.
• Experience working directly with contractors, subcontractors, or construction organizations.
• Background in health and safety, safety management, or safety program administration.
• Experience with construction safety, site safety, and OSHA safety practices.

Work Environment

This role is based on site in Grimes, Iowa, with regular travel to member contractors’ job sites and locations across the state to deliver safety programs and conduct field assessments. The Safety Specialist works in a mix of office, classroom, virtual, and active construction site environments, interacting with a wide range of contractors, safety leaders, and regulatory partners. Business casual attire is expected when working in the office. A vehicle is provided for travel to member locations. The position offers exposure to diverse construction projects, close collaboration with industry stakeholders, and the opportunity to directly influence safer workplaces throughout Iowa.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grimes, IA.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $44.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
