Job summary

City of Raleigh seeks a visionary Director of Pullen Park Amusements and Historic Attractions to lead the Historic Attractions Section within the HRM Program. The Director will oversee programming and operations at Pullen Park and the JCMP carousel, reporting to the Executive Director of HRM.

The role includes supervising 3 FTE, 4 permanent PT staff and many temps/volunteers, managing budgets, and building community partnerships to advance city cultural initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Leisure Activities, Physical Education, Sports/Athletics, Therapeutic Recreation or related field and 5–7 years in recreation program/event work.
• Or any equivalent combination of training and/or experience providing required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with satisfactory driving record or ability to obtain within 60 days.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and manage all budgetary revenue and expenditure accounts for Pullen Park.
• Provide administrative and management support for facility management, including maintenance, staff supervision, and operations.
• Directly supervise three full-time staff, four permanent part-time staff, and dozens of temporary staff; coordinate work schedules.
• Review all programs, special events, and classes prior to implementation.
• Oversee development and distribution of marketing materials per City of Raleigh guidelines.
• Serve as a liaison and build active partnerships with surrounding community groups.
• Promote programs, events, and staff recruitment through presentations to universities and civic groups.
• Collaborate with other departments to develop and implement cultural programs for the public.
• Support public/private partnerships.
• May assist the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for a visionary and innovative leader to direct the Historic Attractions Section within the City of Raleigh’s Historic Resources and Museums Program (HRM Program). The new Director will oversee daily operations and programs at Pullen Park Amusements, as well as stewardship responsibility of the historic carousel at John Chavis Memorial Park.

The Director of Pullen Park Amusements and Historic Attractions will oversee all facets of programming and operations at Pullen Park as well as stewardship of the JCMP carousel. They will serve as a liaison to local community groups and assist and advise on broader city-wide cultural initiatives. The Director reports to the Executive Director of the Historic Resources and Museums Program.

This position will have supervisory responsibilities that include directly supervising 3 full-time staff, 4 permanent part-time staff, and as many as 80 part-time/temporary staff members as well as volunteers. This position will carry out supervisory responsibilities including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems. These responsibilities will be carried out in alignment with the organizations policies and applicable laws.

About Us:

Pullen Park is the oldest public park in North Carolina, the fifth oldest operating amusement park in the United States, and the sixteenth oldest in the world. Pullen welcomes nearly one million visitors each year and hosts the annual Holiday Express, a 17-day festival that is among the premiere holiday events in the State of North Carolina.

The park includes a historic carousel, a quarter-scale CP Huntington electric train, pedal boats, an expansive playground, two event stages, two pétanque and bocce courts, a high-volume food concessionaire, and several other attractions.

Work Hours:

This position will be expected to work rotating park hours Monday through Sunday; 40 hours per week. This position may be required to work weekends and evenings as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Leisure Activities, Physical Education, Sports/Athletics, Therapeutic Recreation or related field; 5 to 7 years’ experience in recreation program/activity and/or special event implementation, marketing, coordinating, or related work

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in public administration, public speaking, and resource management concepts
• Basic knowledge of American history in the US
• Familiarity with Past Perfect, RecTrac, and Microsoft systems software
