Job summary

McDaniel College seeks a Director of the STEM Learning Center to lead tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic support for STEM students. You will collaborate with faculty and student-success partners to implement evidence-based strategies that promote academic excellence and equitable access.

You will oversee staff recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance, while managing budgets, facilities, and learning resources to enhance student achievement and persistence in STEM

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in STEM, Academic Support Services, Learning Centers, or Tutoring programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative, project organization and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Knowledge of learning management systems and tutoring management software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the STEM Learning Center.

  • Provides professional development on best practices in STEM pedagogy and inclusive teaching.

Job description

McDaniel College is a four-year, independent college of the liberal arts and sciences offering over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs. This position has a budgeted hiring rate of $74,000. The position is classified as an A4. The A4 salary band for all full-time, 12-month positions at the college with this classification have a minimum rate of $50,000 and a maximum rate of $93,780. The actual schedule for exempt positions may vary based on the workload and responsibilities assigned.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President of Student Success, the Director of the STEM Learning Center provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for services designed to promote student achievement, persistence, and success in STEM disciplines. The Director is responsible for the management and continuous improvement of tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic support programming, student staff development, and collaborative initiatives that enhance learning outcomes for STEM students. Working closely with faculty, academic departments, and student success partners, the Director develops and implements evidence-based strategies that foster academic excellence, equitable access to support services, and student engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Program Management

  • Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the STEM Learning Center, developing goals, policies, programs, and assessment initiatives that support student success and align with institutional priorities. Collaborates with faculty, academic leaders, and student support services to enhance learning opportunities, promote equitable access, and meet the diverse needs of STEM students. Oversees outreach, marketing, and online engagement efforts to increase awareness and utilization of services, while managing facilities, technology, budgets, supplies, and learning resources. Monitors program effectiveness, analyzes student outcomes and usage data, and prepares reports and recommendations to support continuous improvement, institutional reporting, and accreditation efforts.

Provide professional development opportunities about best practices in STEM pedagogy and inclusive teaching in STEM.

  • Provides expertise and leadership in STEM education by supporting faculty through professional development, consultation, and guidance on effective STEM pedagogy, learning support strategies, and inclusive teaching practices. Serves as a resource on emerging trends and best practices in STEM teaching and learning, contributes to institutional initiatives focused on student retention, persistence, and success, and may teach courses related to peer tutoring and academic support as needed.

Coordinate tutoring efforts in STEM

  • Oversees recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of tutors. Manages tutoring programs, supplemental instruction, academic workshops, study groups, and related student support initiatives to promote academic success. Ensures accurate and compliant processing of employee timesheets and payroll records, and collaborates closely with faculty to support tutors facilitating co-remediation workshops.

Other responsibilities as necessary

  • Supports the STEM Learning Center's mission through collaboration on student success initiatives, STEM outreach and engagement programs, and campus-wide support services. Assists with admitted student events, STEM programming, and academic tutoring initiatives, while partnering with Student Success, Student Accessibility and Support Services (SASS), the Office of Student Belonging, and other campus stakeholders to enhance student support and develop new programs. May also advise student organizations and activities aligned with the center's educational and student development goals.
Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in Education, a STEM field, Higher Education Administrative, or Educational Leadership required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in STEM, Academic Support Services, Learning Centers, or Tutoring programs required, expertise in STEM-related pedagogy preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative, project organization and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented populations.
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently.
  • A demonstrable commitment to and expertise in promoting and sustaining a diverse and inclusive campus.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems, tutoring management software, and student success technologies (i.e. - EAB Navigate360) preferred.
  • Experience training and supporting peer tutors, certifying learning centers, or providing Supplemental Instruction preferred.
