Brown University Health is seeking a dynamic leader for surgical services at Rhode Island Hospital, a leading academic medical center and Level I trauma center. We are seeking a Director of Operating Room, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing to provide strategic leadership across this essential perioperative portfolio. In this highly visible role, you will help ensure safe, high-quality surgical care for pediatric and adult patients across a broad range of specialties, including trauma, neurosurgery, orthopedics, transplant, cardiac, vascular, thoracic, and more, while advancing operational excellence, team collaboration, and continuous improvement across critical perioperative services. The annual salary range for this role is $139,068.80 - $278,158.40.

Responsibilities:

• Lead, manage, and integrate the daily operations of the OR, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing Services departments to ensure optimal workflow in a unified vision that fosters collaboration, open communication, mutual respect and innovative care delivery models for streamlined operations
• Develop and implement staffing plans to ensure levels align with operational/patient needs, and oversee retention strategies to ensure long‑term staff satisfaction, engagement, and reduced turnover
• Stay updated on clinical and technological advancements in perioperative services and integrate best practices into workflows while establishing metrics and benchmarks to align initiatives with organizational goals for quality, efficiency, and safety
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize surgical schedules, patient flow, and instrument sterilization processes by integrating informatics tools to reduce bottlenecks and improve overall perioperative efficiency
• Monitor clinical outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and implement quality improvement initiatives that enhance both surgical and patient care standards across departments, in conjunction with the System Directors
• Oversee managerial audits, risk mitigation efforts, infection control protocols, and trauma care standards to support high‑quality, safe perioperative services and ensure compliance with all relevant healthcare regulations and accreditation standards including those set by The Joint Commission, AORN, and other regulatory agencies
• Actively promote a culture of collaboration and shared learning across departments and facilities within the health system and facilitate a unified approach to patient care, encouraging teamwork, knowledge‑sharing, technology optimization, and best practices
• Evaluate departmental performance to ensure that key performance indicators (KPIs) across efficiency, compliance, and patient outcomes are consistently met and implement corrective action plans based on audit findings to address identified challenges and improve departmental performance
• Participate in the development and monitoring of staff and department budgets and performance to ensure alignment with operational needs and high standards and identify opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining or improving quality of care
• Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including vendors, regulatory bodies, and academic institutions, to support department operations, training, and compliance with best practices

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in nursing required; master's degree in nursing, healthcare administration, or related field preferred (or currently in progress for internal candidates)
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island
• 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in perioperative services served as an intraoperative RN, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role
• American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certifications required; certification in perioperative nursing (i.e. CNOR), and those related to surgical services, sterile processing, or trauma care highly desired (i.e. CSPDT, CST, etc.)
• Demonstrated experience in managing both OR and Sterile Processing Services departments in a large hospital setting, preferably within a Level I trauma center
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, driving improvements in clinical outcomes, patient flow, and operational efficiency and ability to apply principals of Highly Reliable Organization (HRO)
