Job Description

Leads and oversees the Behavioral Health department, setting strategic direction, operational goals, and clinical standards. Responsible for patient assessments, care coordination, and supporting patients and families in adjusting to care environments. The role requires strong leadership, clinical expertise, and operational acumen. Reports to senior leadership and serves as a key collaborator across departments to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement departmental goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide clinical and administrative leadership, ensuring regulatory and quality standards are met.

  • Oversee patient assessments, care planning, and transitions of care.
  • Ensure timely and responsive support to patients and families.
  • Maintain clinical competency and serve as a resource for evidence-based practices.
  • Operational Management
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to optimize productivity and patient outcomes.
  • Monitor department budget and maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Ensure adequate and efficient supply and equipment availability.
  • Team Development
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and retain staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
  • Lead education, training, and competency assessments for staff.
  • Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Participate actively in audits, quality initiatives, and process improvement efforts.
  • Monitor patient safety and risk management issues, resolving them proactively.
  • Maintain effective two-way communication with staff, peers, physicians, and leadership.
  • Collaborate across departments to solve problems and improve patient care delivery.
  • Serve as a role model for professional behavior and skilled, transparent communication.

Qualifications

  • Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Master’s Degree preferred (e.g., MSN, MSW)
  • Experience
  • 3–5 years of managerial or supervisory experience in a healthcare setting
  • 1–2 years of clinical leadership experience in behavioral health or related specialty
  • Licensure (Required – must meet one of the following):
  • RN – Registered Nurse with current state licensure or compact licensure
  • LMSW – Licensed Medical Social Worker with current state licensure
  • Required Skills and Competencies
  • Strong clinical knowledge in mental health and behavioral health services
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and motivate teams
  • Strategic thinking with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, negotiation, and decision-making
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and relevant healthcare systems
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and ability to deliver staff education
  • Adaptability, initiative, and professionalism under pressure
