Job Summary: The Director of Nursing is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, analyzing, and evaluating the nursing services of the department, supervising members of the nurse management team and others as assigned, to provide effective nursing services that meet practice and quality standards. The Director of Nursing assumes charge responsibilities for the facility in the absence of the Administrator.

DON Position Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing; postgraduate study and/or experience in geriatrics is desirable
  • Must be licensed to practice as an RN in Wisconsin
  • Must possess supervision, leadership, and communication skills
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement nursing policies
  • Organized, self-motivated, able to work independently
  • Ability to make decisions in emergencies (fire, tornado, resident condition changes)
  • Understanding of legal aspects of nursing under Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act
  • Physical ability to lift up to 30# waist level, with frequent lifting of objects up to 10#, and push objects up to 25#
  • Ability to stand or walk 4-6 hours in an 8-hour shift; occasionally bend, squat, and twist

DON Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all nursing personnel and direct resident care
  • Recruit, interview, hire, evaluate, discipline, and terminate nursing staff
  • Assist in orientation and training of nursing staff
  • Oversee scheduling to meet regulatory standards
  • Conduct regular professional meetings
  • Evaluate infection control procedures
  • Participate in care planning and QAPI meetings
  • Represent the facility and nursing services professionally
  • Evaluate new resident placements
  • Assume facility responsibility in the absence of the Administrator
  • Seek methods to improve care delivery
  • Be available for call and carry a cellphone as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned for quality resident care
  • Provide administrative and clinical leadership, develop policies, manage budgets, oversee staffing, and promote quality improvement and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as a liaison with other departments, medical staff, and families
