Job summary

Wise Path Recovery Center in West Virginia seeks an experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing operations within our substance use disorder and behavioral health program. This RN leader balances clinical excellence with team leadership, patient safety, and regulatory readiness.

The DON works closely with medical, clinical, operational, and executive leadership to ensure compassionate, recovery‑oriented care and high standards of quality and accountability across the facility.

Schedule: Primarily Monday–Friday with leadership availability based on facility needs

Wise Path Recovery Center is seeking an experienced and mission‑driven Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing operations within our substance use disorder and behavioral health treatment program.

This is a hands‑on leadership role for an RN who can balance clinical excellence, strong team leadership, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and day‑to‑day operations. The DON will serve as a senior member of the treatment team and work closely with medical, clinical, operational, and executive leadership to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, recovery‑oriented care.

What You’ll Do

Lead Nursing Operations

• Provide day‑to‑day leadership and oversight for all nursing services.
• Build and maintain nursing schedules that support appropriate patient coverage and acuity.
• Provide direct nursing support or coverage when operationally necessary.
• Establish clear nursing workflows, communication practices, and shift handoff processes.
• Maintain oversight of nursing supplies, medication processes, and medical operations.

Develop and Support the Nursing Team

• Recruit, onboard, supervise, coach, and develop nursing staff.
• Conduct nursing competency assessments and performance evaluations.
• Identify training needs and provide ongoing clinical education.
• Establish clear expectations for accountability, professionalism, documentation, and patient care.
• Support staff through high‑acuity or challenging clinical situations.

Ensure High‑Quality Patient Care

• Oversee nursing assessments and monitoring of patients with substance use disorders and co‑occurring medical or behavioral health needs.
• Ensure appropriate identification and escalation of withdrawal symptoms, medical concerns, and other high‑risk indicators.
• Ensure physician orders and evidence‑based nursing protocols are followed.
• Support medication administration, reconciliation, and safe medication management.
• Participate in discharge planning and coordination of ongoing medical care.

Drive Compliance & Quality

• Ensure nursing practices comply with applicable federal and state requirements, organizational policies, and accreditation standards.
• Maintain nursing readiness for The Joint Commission and other regulatory surveys, where applicable.
• Monitor nursing documentation, Medication Administration Records (MARs), and clinical records for accuracy and completeness.
• Conduct internal audits and identify opportunities for corrective action or process improvement.
• Participate in incident review, quality improvement, infection prevention, and patient safety initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with applicable confidentiality requirements, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.

Collaborate Across the Treatment Team

• Serve as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
• Partner with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, case managers, recovery support staff, and facility leadership.
• Provide nursing and medical insight during treatment planning and care coordination.
• Coordinate with outside providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and community resources to support continuity of care.
• Communicate appropriately with families and support systems consistent with patient authorization and confidentiality requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
• Strong clinical assessment and nursing judgment.
• Ability to effectively lead, supervise, and develop nursing staff.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of clinical experience in behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment, detoxification, psychiatric care, or a related healthcare environment.
• Previous nursing leadership or management experience.
• Experience supervising nursing teams, managing schedules, and conducting performance management.
• Experience with medication management and infection prevention.
• Familiarity with The Joint Commission, behavioral health accreditation, or healthcare regulatory readiness.
• Experience working within an interdisciplinary treatment environment.
• Knowledge of trauma‑informed and recovery‑oriented care.

Work Environment

This position works primarily within a behavioral health treatment environment and may involve exposure to infectious disease, bodily fluids, medical emergencies, or individuals experiencing behavioral or emotional distress.

The role requires the ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high‑pressure situations, manage competing priorities, and support staff during clinical emergencies or behavioral escalations.

The position may require standing, walking, bending, assisting with patient care, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
