Job summary

Midcoast Conservancy is seeking a Director of Conservation to unite land and water conservation efforts across the service area. You will coordinate strategy, lead two FTEs, oversee outreach and fundraising, and partner with the Director of Stewardship to align on-the-ground work with strategic priorities.

You will report to the Co-Executive Directors and join the Senior Leadership Team, guiding conservation initiatives, community engagement, and organizational effectiveness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a science-related or natural resource field with 7+ years of relevant experience; graduate degree preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in land conservation and management strategies.
• Experience with water quality, watershed management, or aquatic resource protection.
• Familiarity with land conservation transactions and Land Trust Alliance standards.
• Proven supervisory ability to lead a cross-functional team.
• Experience with water-resource and land-conservation regulations, shoreland zoning.
• Experience with fundraising, grant writing, or donor relations.
• Strong relationship-building and communication skills with communities and partners.
• Ability to collaborate with other department leads without direct authority.

Responsibilities

• Refine and implement landscape-scale conservation strategy across the service area.
• Identify and advance conservation opportunities (land, water, easements).
• Track and report conservation outcomes and progress toward goals.
• Supervise land and water staff and support annual work planning.
• Coordinate with Stewardship to align strategy with day-to-day operations.
• Guide aquatic habitat restoration and manage invasive species.
• Oversee the land protection pipeline and keep processes updated.
• Work with municipalities, state and federal agencies, and partners.
• Lead outreach and fundraising for land and water projects.
